What is cholai?

What is the English name for it?

Re: What is cholai?

Google says it's called amaranth greens

Re: What is cholai?

& what is it? Where it is used? Any idea?

Re: What is cholai?

What am I missing here?
Channai?
Aren't those Garbaonzo beans?

Re: What is cholai?

No, its not channay. Its cholai. I myself never heard of it before either.

Re: What is cholai?

Can you at least describe it? Is it a leafy vegetable or a grain or a bean? You've spelled it cholai and the first thought I had was cholay (garbanzo beans/chick peas) just like Muniya. The spelling in Roman English isn't very helpful.

Re: What is cholai?

Cholai is a leafy green that looks similar to baby spinach.
It's used and cooked in a similar way to spinach or sarson ka saag.
Supposed to be very good for you.

This might help with pronunciation: cho-la'ee or with a slight w thrown in "chawla'ee"

Re: What is cholai?

Yeah... what muzna said. It doesn't taste as good as spinach though.

Agree with muzna...
Cholayee ka saag,.. hideous dish.

The leaf tastes horrible.

Eww. Just. Eww

Re: What is cholai?

never heard of it! i thought you were referring to garbanzo beans too. is it an urdu speaking or punjabi dish?

Re: What is cholai?

Dunno......I'll have to pay more attention the next time it speaks to me....

Re: What is cholai?

very funny

:silly::silly::silly::silly:

Re: What is cholai?

They don't mean Choolay which are the chickpeas but cholai, which are a leafy green vegetable. Amarnth Leaf is right!

Re: What is cholai?

Cholaa-ee sag is brilliant. It tastes more like sarson kaa saag than palak ka saag.

I am sure not many of you have heard of Qulfaa, then

Re: What is cholai?

Chaulai is a saag…leaves are cooked just like chana saag. chaulaaii is kinda weed that grows abundantly in India / Pakistan during rainy season. it’s cooked in mustard oil with crushed red chili and salt [to your taste]. usually, it’s eaten with Baajre kii roTii [millet bread].

i used to love it when i was a kid.

here is a pic of chaulaaii leaves:

and, i'm sure you never heard of 'bathua saag' either...haha

Re: What is cholai?

^ I must admit that I never heard of Bathua Saag

Re: What is cholai?

Bathuaa is similar to Kulfaa saag but it's leaves are somewhat larger and less succulent.

Re: What is cholai?

KKF, DO you know if any of these saags (leaves) are available in USA/Canada?

Re: What is cholai?

yes...i once saw chaulai and chana saag in one of the Indian Stores in Brampton, a predominantly Sikh Town. Punjabis [Sikhs] love it.
