What is Ashura ?

Every day is Ashura and every land is Kerbala

What is Ashura ?

In the month of Muharram 61 AH (approx. 20 October 680 AD), an event took place in Iraq at a place known as Kerbala on the bank of the river Euphrates. It seemed in those days insignificant from the historical point of view. A large army which had been mobilised by the Umayyad regime besieged a group of persons numbering less than a hundred and put them under pressure to pay allegiance to the Caliph of the time and submit to his authority. The small group resisted and a severe battle took place in which they were all killed.

It appeared at that time that like hundreds of similar events, this battle would be recorded in history and forgotten in time. However, the events that occurred on the 10th day of Muharram in Kerbala were to become a beacon and an inspiration for future generations. In this article, we shall examine briefly the principal adversaries.

Who is Hussain ?

The leader of the small band of men who were martyred in Kerbala was none other than Husain (A), son of Ali bin Abi Talib (A) and grandson of the Holy Prophet (S). Who was Husain? He was the son of Fatima (A) for whom the Holy Prophet (S) said, “Husain is from me and I am from Husain. May God love whoever loves Husain.” [1]

With the passing away of his brother Hasan(A) in 50 AH, Husain (A) became the leader of the household of the Holy Prophet (S). He respected the agreement of peace signed by Hasan (A) and Muawiya, and, despite the urging of his followers, he did not undertake any activity that threatened the political status quo. Rather he continued with the responsibility of looking after the religious needs of the people and was recognised for his knowledge, piety and generosity. An example of the depth of his perception can be seen in his beautiful du’a on the day of Arafat, wherein he begins by explaining the qualities of Allah, saying:

" (Oh Allah) How could an argument be given about Your Existence by a being whose total and complete existence is in need of you? When did you ever disappear so that you might need an evidence and logic to lead (the people) towards You? And when did You ever become away and distant so that your signs and effects made the people get in touch with you? Blind be the eye which does not see You (whereas) You are observing him. What did the one who missed You find? And what does the one who finds You lack? Certainly, the one who got pleased and inclined toward other than You, came to nothingness (failed)."

On the other hand, we have Yazid, whose father (Muawiya) and grandfather (Abu Sufyan - the arch-enemy of the Prophet) had always tried to sabotage the mission of the Holy Prophet, and who showed his true colour by stating in a poem, “Bani Hashim had staged a play to obtain kingdom, there was neither any news from God nor any revelation.” [2]

Mas’udi writes that Yazid was a pleasure-seeking person, given to wine drinking and playing with pets. It is no wonder that Husain’s response to Yazid’s governor, when asked to pay allegiance to Yazid was, “We are the household of the prophethood, the source of messengership, the descending-place of the angels, through us Allah had began (showering His favours) and with us He has perfected (His favours), whereas Yazid is a sinful person, a drunkard, the killer of innocent people and one who openly indulges in sinful acts. A person like me can never pledge allegiance to a person like him …” [3]

The revolution of Husain (A) was an Islamic movement spearheaded by one of the great leaders of Islam. The principles and laws of Islam demanded that Husain (A) act to warn the Ummah of the evil situation which it was in, and to stand in the way of the deviating ruler. As Husain (A) himself remarked when he left Madina for the last time, “I am not rising (against Yazid) as an insolent or an arrogant person, or a mischief-monger or tyrant. I have risen (against Yazid) as I seek to reform the Ummah of my grandfather. I wish to bid the good and forbid the evil.” [4]

Hussain (A) was killed on the battlefield as he did Sajdah. His head was removed from his body on the plains of Kerbala, mounted on a spear, and paraded through villages and towns as it was taken to Damascus and presented at the feet of Yazid.

Why remember Ashura ?

Why is Husain (A) regarded as the “leader of the martyrs” ? It is because he was not just the victim of an ambitious ruler. There is no doubt that the tragedy of Kerbala, when ascribed to the killers, is a criminal and terrible act. However when ascribed to Husain (A) himself, it represents a conscious confrontation and a courageous resistance for a sacred cause. The whole nation had failed to stand up to Yazid. They had succumbed to his will, and deviation and regression towards the pre-Islamic ways were increasing.

Passiveness by Husain (A) in this situation would have meant the end of Islam as we know it. Thus Husain (A) took upon himself the responsibility of the whole nation. The greatest tragedy was that one who stood up for the noblest of causes, the defence of Islam, was cut down in so cruel a manner.

It is for this reason that the sacrifice of Husain (A) is commemorated annually throughout the Muslim world. Our sorrow never abates as we relive the tragedy. As Allama Iqbal says in his Baqiyat (in Urdu):

Ronay wala hoon Shaheed-e-Kerbala key gham men main,
Kya durey maqsad na dengey Saqiye Kausar mujhey

I am one who weeps at the plight of the Martyr of Kerbala
Won’t the reward be given to me by the Keeper of Kauser (Imam Ali (A))

The commemoration of Ashura on the 10th of Muharram every year serves to remind us of the sacrifices of the family of the Prophet (S). It also makes us aware of the people, then and now, who tried to destroy Islam and the family of the Prophet (S) and all that they stood for - as well as those who watched, listened and did nothing.

ASHURA ! A DAY OF SORROW OR HAPPINESS?

Dear Readers : Salaamun Alaikum,

During Muharrum, the minority start to mourn, they weep and grieve in the love of Hazrat Husain (P) (son of Prophet Muhammad P.) for his greatest sacrifice to save Islam and mankind, who was martyred along with his family and friends without having been given a single drop of water and food for 3-days by the man made caliph, Yazid ibne Mawiya (L). On the other hand the majority believes that though Islam was saved by the sacrifice of H. Husain (P), one should celebrate Ashura as a DAY OF HAPPINESS and should not consider it as a DAY OF SORROW.

This is a very critical matter among the Muslims. We always claim our belief to be perfect and try to impose our views on others, but before striking, why don’t we confirm the fact by examining it through the Holy Quran and Sunnah? Let us find out whether Ashura is a day of sorrow or happiness? If it is a day of happiness, let us guide our brothers, according to the H. Quran, Call to the way of your Lord with wisdom and goodly exhortation… (16:125) and if it is a day of sorrow, let us accept the truth as per H. Quran, O you who believe! Be careful of (your duty to) Allah and be with the true ones. (9:119)

Allah says in the H. Qur'an: Say: I (Muhammad) do not ask of you any reward for it but love for my near relatives... (42:23). a group of companions asked, O Prophet of Allah, who are those of your relatives whose love has been made obligatory on us by Allah? The Prophet replied, They are Ali, Fatima, Hasan, and Husain. (Ref.: Bukhari and Muslim in Sahihs, Imam Tha'labi in Tafsir, Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal in Musnad, Tibrani in Mu'jamu'l-Kabir, Sulayman Balkhi Hanafi in Yanabiu'l-Mawadda). Weeping is the sign of love and respect. It is human nature that a person weeps for one whom he loves. And for this reason Prophet Yaqoob (P) wept so much in the love of his son Prophet Yusuf (P) that the pupil of his eyes became white. (H. Quran - 12 : 84)

As Allah (S) says in H. Quran, And that is He (Allah) it is Who makes (Men) laugh and makes (them) weep. (53:43). If Allah (S) makes a man weep, than how far is it true to condemn others for weeping? Let us find out, what dose the Sunnah says regarding this matter. Our Sunni Scholars say that, Ibrahim (the son of Prophet) was in his last breaths and the eyes of Allah's Apostle (P) started shedding tears. 'Abdur Rahman bin 'Auf said, O Allah's Apostle, even you are weeping! He said, O Ibn 'Auf, this is mercy. Then he wept more and said, The eyes are shedding tears and the heart is grieved, and we will not say except what pleases our Lord. (Ref.: Sahih Al-Bukhari Vol.2, Hadees 390, Book 23, Pg.219)

Our Sunni Scholars write that, Zainab binte Jahash the wife of Prophet (S.) narrates: One day the Messenger of Allah stood up to perform the prayers while holding Husain (P.) in his arms. When he went into ruku or Sajdah he put down Husain (P.) and again took him in his arms when he stood up. When he finished his prayers, he sat down and wept. I said, O Messenger of Allah! Today I have seen you do something that I had never seen before. Prophet (P.) said, Jibraeel came to me and informed me that this Husain (P.) will be killed by my ummat (people). (Ref. Mustadrakul Sahihain, Chp.4 : Pg.398)

Our Sunni Scholars records that, Salami says: I paid a visit to the Prophet’s wife Umme Salma and saw her crying with grief. When I asked her what made her weep, she said, I just dreamt that the Prophet (p) had come with his beard and head covered with dust. When I asked him what had made him so full of grief, he told me that he had just returned after seeing his Husain Martyred. (Ref.: Jam’a Tirmizee Pg.166, Mishkat Vol.8 : Pg.189, Mustadrak Vol.4 : Pg.19)

Thus after referring the above traditions one comes to the conclusion that H. Prophet (P) himself acknowledged, that weeping on H. Husain (P) is a mercy and also it pleases Allah (S). It is a way of expressing thankfulness to H. Husain (P), for saving Islam and humanity. Thus if H. Prophet (P) prefers Ashura to be a day of sorrow and if the H. Prophet mourns on this very day, then how it is possible for us to celebrate Ashura as a day of happiness? If H. Prophet (P) and his wife (Mother of Believers) can weep on H. Husain then why can’t his ummah? Aren’t we the real followers and lovers of H. Prophet (P)? Isn’t it a duty to follow his path (sunnah) and consider Ashura to be a DAY OF sorrow?

I don’t understand why people fear, if some one weeps on H. Husain (P)? It seems that the verdict of Shirk and Biddad is used for a political purpose to keep the innocent Muslims away from the truth and to put a curtain on the evil deeds of Yazid (L), who use to utter such shirk, If wine is prohibited in Islam, let it be so; I will accept Christianity. It is this world alone for us. There is no other world. One who frightens us with the story of doomsday, let him do so. These are false things which deprive us of all the pleasures of sound and music. (Ref.: Sunni Scholar: Abu'l-Faraj Bin Jauzi in his Radd Ala'l-Muta'asibu'l-Anid)

Our Sunni Scholars say that, when the descendants of the Prophet were brought as captives to Syria, Yazid recited the following couplets: I have taken revenge of my elders and near relatives who were killed in the battles of Badr, Uhud, and Hunain by killing the sons of the Prophet. The Bani Hashim only played a game with government. There has come no message from Allah, nor was anything revealed. (Ref.: Sibt Ibn Jauzi writes in his Tadhkira, page 148, Abdullah Bin Uzza Ba'ri. Sibt Ibn Jauzi, Abu Raihan)

Most of our Sunni Scholars regard Yazid as an infidel and a cursed one because his rule brought disgrace on the fair name of Islam. His wickedness included drinking wine, murdering the Prophet's son, cursing the Prophet's successor, demolishing the Kaaba (Masjidu'l-Haram), and a mass killing of 10700 Muslims in Madina. He illegally associates with mothers, daughters, and sisters, and does not offer the ritual prayer. After the mass slaughter of the people of Medina, 1000 unmarried women gave birth to children. (Ref.: Imam Ahmad Ibn Hanbal, Abdu'r-Rahman Abu'l-Faraj Bin Jauzi in his book Kitabu'l-Radd Ala'l-Muta'asibu'l-Anidu'l-Mani'an La'n-e-Yazid La'natullah, Mas'udi, in his Muruju'z-Dhahab, Volume II, Sibt Ibn Jauzi in his Tadhkira, page 63 and 163, Ref.: Abdullah Bin Muhammad Bin Amir Shabrawi Shafi'i in Kitabu'l-Ittihaf be Hubbi'l-Ashraf Raji' ba La'n-e-Yazid, page 20, Allama Samhudi in his Jawahiru'l-Iqdain)

Allah says: And whoever kills a believer intentionally, his punishment is Hell….(4:93) Although Allah (S) has certified Yazid (L) to be the bearer of the Hell, yet some lawyers go on arguing Yazid’s case until the last moment to misguide the ummah because they have received fees from Shaitan, even though they know well the merits of the case. Due to such attitude and nonsense belief of their’s, today Islam and Holy Prophet are blamed in the name of Terrorism.

The Holy Prophet said: If anyone frightens and oppresses the people of Medina, Allah will frighten him. He will be cursed by Allah, by the angels, and by all humanity. And on the Day of Judgement, Allah will not accept any of his deeds. (Ref.: Bukhari and Muslim in the Sahih, Allama Samhudi in Ta'rikhu'l-Medina, Abu'l-Faraj Bin Jauzi in Kitabu'r-Radd Ala'l-Muta'asibu'l-Anid, Sibt Ibn Jauzi in Tadhkira-e-Khawasu'l-Umma, Imam Ahmad Bin Hanbal in Musnad) Didn't this mass slaughter frighten the people of Medina? If it did, then acknowledge along with the Prophet, the angels, and all the people that Yazid was cursed and will go on being cursed until the Day of Judgement.

Those who favor yazid and never distinguish between the grandson of H. Prophet (Husain) and the grandson of Abu Sufiyan (Yazid), for them, Prophet Musa and Firaun both are Raziallah, Prophet Ibrahim and Namrood are also Raziallah and Prophet Adam as well as Shaitan (iblis) too are Raziallah, because they believe both the Oppressed (Mazloom) and the Oppressor (Zaalim) to be equal, and they too compare themselves to be equal to H. Prophet (P). Thus there is nothing new, if one does not mourn on the day of Ashura for they belong to those caliphs who never mourned on the death of H. Prophet and also never attended his funeral. So if the grandfather’s (H. Prophet) death was not shown respect, then how far such antique characters will pay respect to the martyrdom of his grandson.

Well it is up to you to decide now as Allah says; Those who listen to the saying and follow the best of it, those are guided by and they are the mindful. (39:18)

Very informative...mashallah.

Ashur means 10th day or the decade.

The first month of Hijri is Moharram and its 10th day is usually refer as Ashura in Islamic world. There are many significance of this day including shadaat of Hazrat Hussain Ibne Ali radhiallaho anho.

According to the muslim historians and I guess its also a saying of a companion...wallaho alam, there are 10 great events of the world happened on this day. Some which I remember are as follows:

  1. Adam and Eve were forgiven and sent to the Earth.
  2. The Ark of Noah settled on the mountain after the Great flood.
  3. Bani Israel got rid of Firon in the command of Moses at the same day
  4. Hussain Ibne Ali R.A got shadaat
  5. Qyamat will also happen on the same day

There are four others which I am forgetting.

I don't know what language but in some Indian languages Ashura means the demons and Devas mean the Gods
