what in the world is this glassdoor thing?

So I was away from fb for a few days and even before that I have been receiving numerous requests for some stupid glassdoor thing.

Can someone tell me what is it?

Re: what in the world is this glassdoor thing?

It's a job/career community site. They're on FB now so u can see where your friends work, references, like a mini-LinkedIn. That's what I've been able to understand so far.

Re: what in the world is this glassdoor thing?

I also got few request, I think it is some kind of linkedin/professional network.

Re: what in the world is this glassdoor thing?

what's the point, if you're already connected via fb?

OK coming back to this Glassdoor thingie.

So my FB says 2 requests on Glassdoor, I click and it takes me to my Glassdoor profile. And I have all these connections that have been activated. I don’t understand what I’m doing there, how it works, and why the heck it takes me out of my FB account !

Someone please explain with patience and simple language. Me no understand inglish, i refugee status.

Re: what in the world is this glassdoor thing?

The Glassdoor FB app is tricky… if you don’t pay attention, it automatically “activates” all your connections… meaning that it mines through your FB contacts and their profiles and subsequently, on your Glassdoor profile, it shows you the companies and people you are connected to directly and indirectly through your friends and friends-of-friends. Also, these friends will then get Glassdoor requests on your behalf and be asked to complete their profiles on the Glassdoor website where they’ll be asked to provide reviews about their employer.

The ultimate objective here for Glassdoor is to gain access to data and user reviews about companies to add to its substantial employer reviews database. Asfor the end-user, the value proposition is to be able to network more effectively for job searches and identify companies where you may have an “in” by virtue of who you know (on FB) and where they work.

Re: what in the world is this glassdoor thing?

to answer the questions regarding Glassdoor - what is it? and how's it different from LinkedIn, here's my perspective:

As a standalone website, Glassdoor is a useful resource for gaining information about organizations – especially for anyone seeking a job, it provides useful insights through user reviews about corporations' cultures, customs, management pros/cons, compensation etc.

The deep integration with Facebook that happened earlier this year is called “Inside Connections”. The purpose of this integration is two-fold. First, for job seekers, they’ll be able to see which of their Facebook friends or friends-of-friends are connected to that company (as either current or past employees). Second, Glassdoor is using the Facebook integration to authenticate users on its own website and this allows them to offer them a more personalized end-user experience – it’s trying to tap into your Facebook history & profile to present you with jobs and companies that may be of interest to you.

Now why are they doing this? and how are they different from LinkedIn? A couple of things come to mind. Firstly, they’re targeting a different younger demographic than the audience that LinkedIn caters to. Secondly, they’re banking on the assumption that when people look for jobs, some of the very first people that they turn to are their closest friends – who may be on Facebook but not necessarily on LinkedIn. They might be on to something here…
