What if

Bahadur Shah was more inclined to administrative issues instead of doing Poetry?

Had that changed the route of history?

Re: What if

BhadurShah did what ever he could, by the time sixty year old became King, his predecessors had lost everything:)

Re: What if

Maybe he could have held on to what he had better. But those were difficult times for him. He ruled over an "empire" that by then barely extended beyong Delhi. He was a sufi and tolerant ruler as per historical accounts. But militarily he was weak and he did not take part in administration. Mirza Mughal his son was his commander-in chief but he did not have military experience. The East India company was too powerful then and executed the princes at Khooni Darwaza. Even if he was a better ruler, I cannot see how given the political landscape of that time , he could have changed the course of history.

Re: What if

Does that mean '1857 Revolt' was totally a flop idea?

Re: What if

:cb: do aarzoo main kat gae do intezar main

he had to wait lot for becoming king

Re: What if

It was not a united effort and was concentrated in certain areas like UP and parts of central India. There was no support from Bombay , madras presidency, Bengal or even the begum of Bhopal who openly supported the British. Sikhs from punjab and NWFP supported the British.
Given how powerful the East India company was already and the measures it took to prevent the riots from happening elsewhere though there a few incidences in faraway Burma, I am not sure it had a chance of succeeding to a good extent in the first place. Like I said lack of Unity was a major :nook:

Re: What if

Instead of doing poetry? Was he a professional poet ?

Re: What if

Good points :k:

That means that East India company had strong influence in other parts, even before Bahadur Shah became king.

It is rightly said that British ruled by following ‘Divide and Rule’, there were uprising before 1857’ but an organised and unified effort was never taken against British (East India Company)

Re: What if

Yes he was, he was shagird of poet Zauq, rival of Mirza Asadullah khan Ghalib

It was not even idea, troops reacted suddently in the kali paltan area of meerut cantonement which now houses a big temple in the area called Kali paltan mandir. Slowly the unorganized revolt reached as far as bareilly to neemach.
Punjab,KP,Rajputana didn't revolt at all.

Re: What if

What do you mean by professional poet?

Re: What if

^ who write poetry books and sell it...like writers.

Re: What if

not his deewan was not published. He used to invite poets in his court for Musha'ira and patronized poets from his pension money
