I think probably the most disturbing thing about the possibility (though it may be small) that extremists could take over Pakistan is that then they'd have their hands on nuclear weapons.

The Taliban would be incapable of ruling anything like Pakistan.
Islamists movements the world over that actually win elections typically have social service programs in parallel to (or in lieu of) government ones, support education, etc. They are typically urban movements, not rural ones.
The Taliban are an anomaly to this pattern thanks to the support they got from a certain nation's intelligence agencies.
Realistically, we'd look at a party like JI...but again, they're mostly talk and run too much like a club. Had Pakistan had a version of Hezbollah or The Brotherhood, the very premise of the questioning would be different.
