instead of supporting hard core taliban elements had pak supported moderate elements of taliban, nato would have forced northern alliance to work out a power sharing agreement with the break away fraction of taliban...
it would have been a winning proposition for both the parties...
thats where pak has missed a trick or two..

^ Pakistan wants a stable Afghanistan, period. When the Soviet war ended, those that carried out the war left, leaving behind a rag tag struggle which affected us the most because of the largest number of refugees in the world living in our country. Sadly, countries like India and Iran played a negative role and the country had so much chaos, and Afghanistan never saw any hint of stability till Pakistan got things done their own way. So who should be blame for all this?

No Spock bhai, Iran, India and Pakistan all played negative role (whats more negative than incorporating a wahabi militia). Pakistan however succeeded (for a while). After 9-11, Pakistani government asked talibans to hand over the arab fighters, which they refused (EHSAAN FARAMOSH). They thought they had God on their side, but the "test" showed completely different results.

If Americans leave, it will allow the locals to form a Govt. of their own liking without a foreign dictation. If the locals elect Taliban or ex-Mujahideen, then that's their right. It's their country afterall.
What will happen for a while though is that there would internal feud just as was the case right after Soviet withdrawal. India will probably push for the current regime to remain intact, while the those opposed to it will want a fresh election to decide who stays and who goes.
Peace will eventually prevail.
