What goes well with chicken Biryani? - Party Menu suggestions

Hello folks!

I have a lunch get together coming up for 9 guests.

I am making chicken biryani with raita and salad. What else can I make? What do you normally expect to see paired with biryaani?
Although biryani itself is labour intensive, I feel that its just one dish and people might want to have a choice of more than one item.
Other things that I know how to make are kebabs and lasagna.

What do you think?

shaamii kabaab :)

Thanks KKF.
Can I make them a day before? Whats the difference between shaami kebabs and normal mince kebabs?

Re: What goes well with chicken Biryani? - Party Menu suggestions

Well, since it's chicken biryani that you'll be making....then make the kababs from a different meat so that it's not repetitive. You can do seekh kababs, chapli kababs, shami kababs etc etc.

What we usually make along with biryani is haleem...which like biryani is also a very hearty and filling dish. We also add a veggie dish...to round out the menu and it might be something like palak or saag for instance.

Typically in a desi dawat menu there is one rice dish (biryani/pulao/etc), a salan type dish that can be eaten with roti, a veggie dish, and maybe a dry meat dish like kababs. Then throw in a salad, a basket of roti, and raita and your spread is complete.

As much as I love pasta and especially lasagna and I tend to gravitate toward it, I think that it kinda clashes with a Desi menu if that's what you're going for. Desi and Italian are two diff flavors...and biryani is heavy on it's own....and lasagna with it's layers of cheese and pasta is equally if heavy if not more. It's like the lasagna can rival the biryani.

If you rock making kababs...I say go for it. Make some bad-a$$ kababs to go with your biryani and maybe add a veggie salan dish that can be eaten with store bought naan such as chanay/cholay or palak....throw in salad that you can get premade from the grocery store even to save time...whip up a raita...and you're done.

We are such stuff that dreams are made on i.e biryani and kebabs! Kidding

Hi Tempest,

Thank you for taking the time to reply.

Although I love both saag and haleem, I have never tried making them myself.

What you say makes sense. Kebabs it is with perhaps... palak paneer? How does one make chaney choley? Whichever is quicker I will make that!

Re: What goes well with chicken Biryani? - Party Menu suggestions

Make normal mince kababs then...nothing wrong with that. Do what you are familiar with...it turns out better especially if there's a time crunch.

Re: What goes well with chicken Biryani? - Party Menu suggestions

Sound advice. However I feel I have to try out these shaamis now! Ive seen a recipe on youtube and will give that a go! Lets see how that turns out.

Re: What goes well with chicken Biryani? - Party Menu suggestions

Question - if I make palak paneer a day before will it lose its colour or taste?

So all I've got to do is reheat and serve. Please let me know.

Re: What goes well with chicken Biryani? - Party Menu suggestions

My palak question - anyone?

Re: What goes well with chicken Biryani? - Party Menu suggestions

No. For dawats we make salans 1-3 days in advance, but biryani we make on the same day. So the palak paneer will be fine if you make 1 day ahead of time.

Re: What goes well with chicken Biryani? - Party Menu suggestions

Brilliant.

Thank you Tempest. May you be tempted by lots of biryanees in future. And more.

Update - Already made shaami kebabs and frozen them - palak paneer, here I come!

Re: What goes well with chicken Biryani? - Party Menu suggestions

I am pleased to report that Chicken Biryani - shaami kebab and Palak paneer make an excellent combination. I made raita with boondi, mint corriander chutney and salad with it. It was received well. Thanks to KKF and tempest.

On a break from the kitchen now!
