We’re returning the out-laws to Pakistan for awhile, and staying for a short while. What are the suggested gifts now? My SIL doesn’t want any more lotions, cleansers, or the usual, just some makeup, and sweaters have been given a thumbs-down, so what does everyone want? What should we get for my teenage nieces? The boys asked for a Wii - does it work there and are games available?
Wii should work, provided they dont have a 30 year old television. Make sure its got a composite video in. As for games for the Wii, I am not 100% sure but they'd prolly be imported ones and be expensive in some lavish toy stores. Theres a nice one in Islamabad in Jinnah Super, whre black beards used to be. Also make sure you start looking for a Wii here well before you go because its hard to find in stores.
I'd say, just give ppl cash. Relatives never appreciate anything you bring for them and always naak chira and act like stuff you buy is cheap and crap and act like you got it for free. I say 3000-5000 rupees is good depending on how close they are to you.
Thanks for the suggestions - how will the Wii work on a voltage converter? We thought about trying to pick one up in Dubai on the way over, but were afraid that we wouldn't be able to find one. I think we'll try to get a few games here too, as Wal-Mart has had some that weren't too pricy.
Is there anything besides cash that would be appreciated? I usually by unstitched kapra there for the phuppos, but would like to get something for at least my SILs and nieces.
amana, if the gray power adapter to the wii says 110-240V 50/60Hz, then you can use it... otherwise you can get a step down transformer/voltage converter for pretty cheap in pakistan. Just make sure not to plug it in if its not rated to handle 220V or u'll toast the adapter.
My mom always takes unstiched 3 piece suits from the middle east for everyone. In the past, my parents have taken something for the whole family, like some sort of appliance they people normally dont buy themselves because its expensive but is useful to them.
Last year, my inlaws went back to Pak a couple of months before we did and took individual gifts for everyone (toys for boys, gold earrings for the girls, smallish gold sets for the SILs, winter jackets for the BILs). So when we went a few months later, all we took was chocolates and some dry fruits and nuts. We also took stuff like shampoo and body lotion but only for his parents and no individual presents.
How about some handbags for the girls? Or buy them dresses of their choice from there?
bags for the ladies is a great idea as i did not c too much variety of branded/designer bags in pak
for the boys..a Wii (i wish i was ur relative n a boy lol)
personally i would stick to the normal stuff, and i wouldnt give them money well to close its ok, bcoz once u start giving money they keep on expecting it.
Wii - thats asking for quite abit isnt it?
Items: chocolate, engraved stuff, mp3 player, digital cameras
Cash: with the above mentioned stuff, it is very important because lots of people are behind in their finances, they cannot ask the things that they can use for their kids weddings.
Shopping: Take them for the shopping locally and they can buy what they want, now dont need to take any stuff there from abroad, you name it and it will be available there.
Gold: for those you think will get marry soon, this will give them some thing very safe that they can use or convert into cash when they want it.
Hot stuff: if you have very closed cousins who are married or to be in the relation soon, then do some shopping at la vein rose, la senza, etc. I had this thought and took some for my couple of friends wives and for couple others alike. and believe me they loved it even more than the cash, reason because most of the people have never thoght of this as a gift and it alwasy consider as anecessity. Now lasenza has a location in lahore.
For Education: If there are kids in your family friends who want to go to good school or university but need funds and if you can commit to it for their one year tution fee or for the course length fee, I found it the best gift that you can ever give, I have done that and doing it and found it the most valuable among all other said.
** 110-240V 50/60Hz will work there, you just need the different end that is normally round.
