what exactly is this supposed to mean?

so women are defiicient in religion and intelligence b/c of things not in our control???

Volume 1, Book 6, Number 301:

Narrated Abu Said Al-Khudri:

Once Allah's Apostle went out to the Musalla (to offer the prayer) o 'Id-al-Adha or Al-Fitr prayer. Then he passed by the women and said, "O women! Give alms, as I have seen that the majority of the dwellers of Hell-fire were you (women)." They asked, "Why is it so, O Allah's Apostle ?" He replied, "You curse frequently and are ungrateful to your husbands. I have not seen anyone more deficient in intelligence and religion than you. A cautious sensible man could be led astray by some of you." The women asked, "O Allah's Apostle! What is deficient in our intelligence and religion?" He said, "Is not the evidence of two women equal to the witness of one man?" They replied in the affirmative. He said, "This is the deficiency in her intelligence. Isn't it true that a woman can neither pray nor fast during her menses?" The women replied in the affirmative. He said, "This is the deficiency in her religion."

Re: what exactly is this supposed to mean?

An example of a hadith that was most likely mis-narrarated, or mistakenly included in the collections of hadith. There really is no logic to it. Either that or the term "deficiency" is being mis-translated.

And then people wonder why I caution people about hadith and their accuracy.

Re: what exactly is this supposed to mean?

asking an actual religious scholar would be much better than posting it on here on gs and expecting the correct answer from the so called religious scholars of gs.....

and by religious scholar i mean someone who actually knows what he is talking about, not the innovators and people who have no clue what they are talking about ..

Re: what exactly is this supposed to mean?

exactly, it seems to me as a genuine case of a fake hadith which probably found its way in main stream books because some chauvinist men must have liked it to tame their wives (who generally complain a lot), however if someone wants to understand the reason of this complaining please read the book," women are from Venus,Men are from mars"

Re: what exactly is this supposed to mean?

Maybe in Some cases like Warasat and Witness you can say that but what you say about this Hadith.

Bukhari Hadith 8.2 Narrated byAbu Huraira
A man came to Allah's Apostle and said, "O Allah's Apostle! Who is more entitled to be treated with the best companionship by me?" The Prophet said, "Your mother." The man said. "Who is next?" The Prophet said, "Your mother." The man further said, "Who is next?" The Prophet said, "Your mother." The man asked for the fourth time, "Who is next?" The Prophet said, "Your father."

Re: what exactly is this supposed to mean?

^ Darn straight. So, then isn't this hadith contradictory to the one posted earlier? Why are women made out to be horrible deficient creatures in some hadith, and then painted to be ideals to look up to in others. If we're deficient, why look up to us?

Re: what exactly is this supposed to mean?

That was clearly a chastisement leveled at the women of the congregation who were misbehaving.

Other hadith which record the same event don’t even elaborate on deficient in religion and intelligence bit.

Re: what exactly is this supposed to mean?

it means the same as ..wht u ppl do ..soo think abt wht u do ...& wht r u doing now hahahaa .....just kidding
Actually according to islam , I think a women have to stay in hoem ...as she doesn t move out much ...soo she is less with info and knowledge ....and the men are supposed to tell them each and everything teaching of islam and Sunnah ...as men interect with the society and with other ppl more often thn women .........thts all...

Re: what exactly is this supposed to mean?

how is that hadith deviated from what actually happens?

and please, enuff with the "some random hadith made its way into the hasan hadiths".

People who compiled the hadiths wud know better than us.

Re: what exactly is this supposed to mean?

Well, I don't think I'd want you coming home to me teaching me anything. I don't think I would learn much...

Re: what exactly is this supposed to mean?

please refrain from extrapolating the meaning of Hadiths the way you feel like, can some one quote me any other hadith which conveys the same meaning that women are deficient in intellect and whatever. This is a pauline christian concept (not Jesus christianity), you must be well aware that Bible directly refers Eve as the sole cause of mankind going astray (bible not the revealed one, but the compiled one), however nowhere Quran refers this rather uses the term ," The Devil led them astray". Only in one place it has been said that witness of two men or one man and two women, but nowhere mentioned as women having half witness. only reason was that if one forgets other makes her remember. The rationale behind it may be any, Allah knows better but no where it is explicitly given as women being inferior in intellect etc etc etc

Re: what exactly is this supposed to mean?

what seems to you does not make it so. Unless there is a proof. We can't just accept or reject a hadith without a proof, as we may call a hadith we like true, and the ones that hit our nerves fake...

wallahu alam

Re: what exactly is this supposed to mean?

If the hadith contradicts the Quran, it shouldn't be in the collection. This one does, because it doesn't make sense to punish women for things that are not in their control (i.e. menstruation).

Re: what exactly is this supposed to mean?

hadith is NOt infallible..period, and even if a hadeeth is true, and all biases and addition/subtractions/deletions of the narratign chain taken out (if there were any and whether they were intentional or unintentional) one has to look at the circumstances in which something was said and whether it is applicable to a situation like that or for all situations at all times.

hadeeth is indeed a source of guidance, but, one has to be careful. Now as far as ppl before us being better equipped, sure they were, but they were human and assuming that they had no agendas they could still make errors.

Additionally, I would like to make one point and will probably get blasted for it but its true. Some of the best muslims were in teh early days of islam, and some of the worst muslims were in the early days of Islam. I mean what kind of person sees the prophet, has the benefit of contact with him has that experience and then puts politics ahead of the prophet's teachings? While we remember that the best muslims were in that era, just the treachery committed by some in that era show that some of the worst ones were there as well.

Re: what exactly is this supposed to mean?

well i said,"seems to" due to the reason that it directly contradicts Quran, only one place Quran mentions about dominance of men over women but that too has been translated by many scholars as not dominance but more responsible. It is absurd to think that such like thing can be uttered by our prophet.

hadiths are the biggest catch in Islam (because of mixing original and fake) and one has to tread the path very carefully and till wherever possible use Quran as the guiding source. That is why i commented that this Hadith seems to me as somewhat contrary to Quran. There is no reason to outrightly believe it.

Re: what exactly is this supposed to mean?

Fraudia i think we did have a debate on how hadith are infallible, and how Allah has taken responsibility of protecting the Hadith.

One of the requirements for a hadith to be graded "saheeh" is that it should not contradict an stronger evidence, which is the Quran.

The fact that it is a Saheeh hadith, and graded by one of the greatest of all hadith scholars, Imam Bukhari...means that Hadith does not contradict a stronger evidence.

btw. The hadith does not say that they will be punished because of their deficiency in intelligence and in religion. The Prophet just said its a weakness in them, and thats it.

The reason why they will be punished is because of the two reasons he stated, i.e cursing and being ungrateful.
