That is a brilliant question …
What draws us near to God is intimacy with His Names … If we reflect on His Names and do Dzikr on them bringing them into our hearts - then we have put Him (i.e. His Names) in our heart (literally remembrance, but here a metaphorical switch takes place).
The way people draw near to God is by getting Him to draw near to you … If God comes near to us, then we are effectively coming near to God. Belief in God focuses on our separation with Him … it is an intellectual exercise … We need this belief to be able to bear the pressure of getting close to Him.
The task is to approach Him without losing oneself … Tawheed is to mark our separation … Yet we get as close as possible … Our “orbit” should be tight, but not too much so … we should observe adab by keeping distance and observe **love **by drawing near … If we are too far then our condition is like “mars” a barren cold land or further still like gaseous planets … if we approach too near then we burn like Venus and Mercury only very dense solids exist there … life is where the balance is - neither are we too hot and solid nor are we cold and gaseous - but we are warm and liquid …
The stages are well established:
1> Understand Him
2> Obey Him
3a> Always keep Him in your mind
3b> Always keep Him in your heart

If one has to approach Him without losing oneself to keep Tauheed intact, then what kind of closeness ‘Fana Fillah’ represent. The terminology suggest that there would be no separation after one goes through the stage of ‘Fana Fillah’.

hidaayat ka lamha koi bhi ho sakta hai. any of these situations or even others can be responsible to bring a person closer to God and even make him farther as well !

No, Faith is based only on more faith
Allaah says in Quran:
وَالَّذِينَ اهْتَدَوْا زَادَهُمْ هُدًى وَآتَاهُمْ تَقْوَاهُمْ
And those who are guided - He increases them in guidance and gives them their righteousness
Expectations r the tests, exams from Allaah to test our faith
So one shud hv faith if expectations fulfilled, he shud be Thankful to Allaah
If not he shud b saabir n not letting his faith down n not being na shukra as his beleif shud b this is the exam
So actually expectations depend on our faith, its not our faith depend on our expectations

His creations are distractions - He can be seen in them in what He is not … Beauty is found by pondering on His Names and internalising them.

To attempt to go into Fana fi-llah without Tawheed will result in heresy on the way, of course … Neither is it possible to actually get to that state without Tawheed in tact.

So Fana Fillah is a misnomer? It can’t happen in reality. Fani can’t get that close to La-fani.

As I said you need to have Tawheed to understand Allah (SWT) … Fana fillah is not an intellectual or rational thing … So the two are not equatable … It is like saying “We come from God” but “God made us from nothing” … As we draw close to God … without solid Tawheed we might think that approaching God is the same as approaching God likeness Auzdubillahi … The moment that happens we are actually moving away from God not towards Him.
The more unveilings He gives us the greater the test that we start to think the miracles are coming from us … Fana fillah is an experience but it should not be consciously attempted it comes through a natural progression … Adab keeps us away from Allah (SWT) love keeps us attracted to Him … There must be a balance … If we break that balance … which is possible then we lose the purpose … The Fana fillah is hence not a condition that is linked to losing ourselves completely … It has to be understood in the context of what is permissible … The annihilation in God is not to be taken literally … And it has to be understood in context to Tawheed not in isolation to it.
To put it simply …
We can only be lost in God when we know we can never be lost in Him …
The moment we think we are lost in Him we are actually lost in our own ego.
