What does it mean to be yourself????.........

Re: What does it mean to be yourself????.........

One word, FAIL.

Also, Maulana Chris Cornell rehmatullah once said, "to be yourself is all that you can do".

Re: What does it mean to be yourself????.........

It seems that your challenge isn't about not being able to be yourself, it's asserting your independence vis-a-vis your parents. You want the liberty to do things that your parents, I assume frown upon, and to your way of thinking their disapproval of your independence is perceived to be them stifling your independent expression of your true being.

Many of us disagree with our parents restrictions on us, but we learn to live with those restrictions and where necessary, make compromises. But, that my dear requires maturity and the ability to empathize with our parents perspective as well.

Re: What does it mean to be yourself????.........

How about being yourself and not bounded by outside force? We are born in the world with choices.

Re: What does it mean to be yourself????.........

I certainly empathized with them for 10yrs of my life to begin with as I understand the value of establishing restrictions. Now, I want to be a free bird of my own life and I can only perceive it via courage, strength, & trust within myself... I don't want to live a fake life or make more compromises because I should be in control of my own life.

Re: What does it mean to be yourself????.........

what is this thread about again??

Re: What does it mean to be yourself????.........

What does it mean to be yourself?

Re: What does it mean to be yourself????.........

As Rumi said "If you could get rid of yourself just once, the secret of secrets would open to you. The face of the unknown, hidden beyond the universe would appear on the mirror of your perception"

The world does not revolve around any one. We all need to learn that

Re: What does it mean to be yourself????.........

Well, my goodness then what are you waiting for? Fly away little bird, go forth to where your little heart desires. Leave behind mommy and daddy's safe little nest.

Mind you, when mommy and daddy say the nest is closed when you want to return, remember, they too will be asserting their true self via courage, strength, and trust within themselves. Because they also won't want to live a fake life or make more compromises because they too should be in control of their own lives..

Re: What does it mean to be yourself???..

I think the topic of the thread is really good actually… or was :vivo:
Firstly, have those standards, norms, rules of society etc sort of made people clone-like?
Is it because the creativity is being discouraged, anything strange or weird is looked down upon, or today’s society’s pressures are suppressing more than just our wild and naked selves…?

nevermind :@:

@$eher fly around and have all the fun you want to have w/t a care in the world

Re: What does it mean to be yourself????.........

It means I am normal. :)

Re: What does it mean to be yourself????.........

Families should build one another up and encourage one another. Cutting family ties is not necessary to be yourself because I love them to death. I am just demanding rights for my life so it does not limit my development as an individual. Why can’t I go on a road trip with the girls where on other hand boys can? I do have very strong morals for myself and my life but you should also empathize with me.

Re: What does it mean to be yourself???..

Thank you for bringing interesting concepts to tie into the discussion of “being yourself” … Most people are other people, their thoughts are someone else’s opinions, my desire is to have an independent life as a girl with my own set of standards. My parents have instilled good values in me so I shouldn’t be stopped from learning.

Re: What does it mean to be yourself????.........

lol.. I think your abnormal ;)

Re: What does it mean to be yourself????.........

It may not be easiest thing to do, but I think it's okay to go against old traditional values to be your own individual. "Age/Time" do not necessarily make a tradition ethical/fair/effective/sensible.

Re: What does it mean to be yourself????.........

So is it acceptable to travel the world on my own as a female?

Re: What does it mean to be yourself???..

I’m curious about how you reconcile your ideals on maintaining traditions as you’ve set out in this thread with your thoughts on how individuality is being stifled and we are all becoming clone-like by observing social norms and standards?

Re: What does it mean to be yourself???..

In that thread I did say individualism is a good thing, one can choose if they want to follow traditions or not… but breaking away from traditions for the sake of modernization or to appear modern or to think that all traditions hinder progress - this sort of thinking is a misconception.
And again, it was mentioned and mutually agreed that the bad traditions such as gender inequality in education etc should be abandoned.

Re: What does it mean to be yourself???..

people can control my actions, people can control my sight, people can control my words. but ALHUMDULLAH they cant control my imagination. :mash:

I really thankful to ALLAH SWT that HE SWT has given me enough to atleast maintain third degree of iman. (cuz sometimes you have to do under your love ones pressure that your heart says No, but you end up doing it. )

Re: What does it mean to be yourself????.........

Ok look, Socrates.......... There are desi women who have traveled the world on their own..although it may not be widely accepted in our culture. And then I think there are also rulings in religion that say that a woman can't go past a certain distance without a male/mahram. Don't know the details about such rulings though. Whether or not something is "acceptable" will vary from person to person....it can be debated and argued and one has the responsibility to look at the pros and cons of a situation when making a decision. Needless to say....any decision that one takes (whether it is in accordance with cultural views/traditions or otherwise).....it WILL have consequences. You have to decide whether you can handle those consequences and if you're prepared for them. And as frustrating as it can be, making compromises is also a part of life.
