What does Islam says about fasting in places where sun does not set?

I know in some Scandinavian countries such as Finland and parts of Alaska where sun does not set during summer. What does Islam says about such places?

Muslims in Burj Khalifa told to delay Iftar

DUBAI: Muslims living in the world’s tallest tower will have to wait even longer to break their fast during the holy month of Ramazan.

Mohammed al-Qubaisi, Dubai’s top Muslim cleric, said on Sunday that Burj Khalifa residents living above the 80th floor should wait two additional minutes to break their dawn-to-dusk fast while those above the 150th floor must wait three extra minutes because they will be able to see the sun longer than those on the ground.

The half-mile high tower has 160 habitable floors. Al-Qubaisi said the decree is similar to those relating to Muslims traveling on airplanes, and harkens back to a time when people living in the mountains broke their fast after those at lower elevations.

Peace Shamraz Khan

In places where the sun does not set the sun will make a U-shaped curve in the sky near but just above the horizon … and that should be calculated accordingly … just like it is for prayer … so when the angle of decent reaches a certain rate then one assumes maghrib, and when the sun comes back to another point in altitude then fast starts again. If you want a more detailed answer then give me the latitude and longitude readings of the location. And I’ll try to convert that in to times - I used to have a calculator that worked in DOS but since Windows has been upgraded I need some emulators to run it …

I’ll try though … inshaAllah

I read somewhere that if you are in a place where the sun doesnt set, you should be following the timings of the closest major city where the sun does set.

Re: What does Islam says about fasting in places where sun does not set?

**i was watching the Pakistani show "Deen o Danish" where Dr Khalid Zaheer is a guest. he is a learned islamic scholar. a couple of people from Norway and sweden called in. they asked the same question...that, where they live the days are extremely lonnng [20 hours] so they wanted to know what the ruling is for them in regards to fasting. He replied that they had no choice but to fast that long...he also mentioned that ramadhan during winter will bring glad tidings when they have to fast exceptionally shorter rozas.

SaimaB is right that if there is no marked differentiation between night and day then you have to follow the time table in the nearest city where there is a marked demarcation between day and night.**

Re: What does Islam says about fasting in places where sun does not set?

I am no aalim but the fatwa about Burj Khalifa is so wrong. Following the same logic, if I am living in a 2 mile deep coal mine, I should break my fast earlier. Just does not make sense.

Re: What does Islam says about fasting in places where sun does not set?

I read the same thing.

Re: What does Islam says about fasting in places where sun does not set?

but if you're living in a 2 mile deep coal mine how are you seeing the Sun? Dont say periscope because then your iftar will be same time as the surface dwellers.

Re: What does Islam says about fasting in places where sun does not set?

I would go by the timing of the surface ...

I have similar issue with the fatwa on breaking the fast during airplane journey. I know that traveler is not required to fast, but according to the fatwa, I cannot break my fast till the sun is visible. That is a situation if I am traveling from east to west and sun may never set for me no matter how long my journey is.

Re: What does Islam says about fasting in places where sun does not set?

Isn't there fatwa about Ramzan and Eid moon sighting that if you do not see moon in your city/country/region for some weather related reason , then if a group of people from neighboring city/country/region give you shahada of moon sighting you go by that shahada. I guess this fatwa can be extended to situations where you are not able to see sun for purposes of starting or breaking your fast.

Re: What does Islam says about fasting in places where sun does not set?

There is also a fatwa that for places where sun never sets in summer, you pick a nearest "normal" city. In case of long plane journey, where sun is visible for hours and hours, why cant we use the similar fatwa

Exactly , I agree.

Many of these mullahs make non-sense of everything and everyone. They have hijacked the spirit of religion.
