Heard from a colleague that those who live in old city area (Karachi) are well versed of the term. Might be common in Mumbai.

Re: What does 'DeRhiya' mean?
I know of dehriya, not deRhiya. The former means atheist, there were at least two trends yesterday regarding ex Muslim atheists, one international and another of Pakistanis.
Re: What does 'DeRhiya' mean?
lols. No not that dehriya.
This ex-Muslim atheists might be deRh hushiyari to malign image of Islam, which is btw very well done by religious extremists.
Re: What does ‘DeRhiya’ mean?
in our area, it’s pronounced as DhiRyaa [if this words refers to the word given by you].
**DhiRyaa = jack-o-lantern **اگيابيتال [in Urdu]
in northern India, there is a festival called ‘GuRiyaa’ for women ONLY. they take dolls of all sizes made from cloth and illuminated DhiRyaas to the local pond where they beat those dolls with sticks and then drown them.
i could not ever understand the significance of beating and drowning those dolls.

The word I'm talking about is about deRh.. 1.5 (like DeRh Ishqiya).
Re: What does 'DeRhiya' mean?
oh...btw, does it refer to 'chalaakii'? vo jo apne ko bahot chalaak bantaa ho? i mean 'extra chalaak'?
Re: What does 'DeRhiya' mean?
No. Its about particular kind of buildings. Like Chaal (Kholi) in Mumbai.
Lets wait for posters from Karachi like TLK and D6.
BTW, why DeoRhi is called so? Are there any Baolis (not baola pun wali baoli) in India?
Re: What does 'DeRhiya' mean?
Muqawwee, i have no idea but guessing that it might be word for the chokidar, darbaan assigned at the deorhi of havelis
Re: What does 'DeRhiya' mean?
Oh you said, its related to Derh as in 1.5.
Re: What does ‘DeRhiya’ mean?
I was told that it is a one room+ a lounge house / flat that is called ‘DeRhiya’ among people living in old city area like Kharadar, Ranchor line, etc.
Seems that it is just specific to old area. In posh areas, similar setting is called ‘studio apartment’.
Here is one ad for sale:
Re: What does 'DeRhiya' mean?
Is the price in add 5 lakh or 50 lakh? I am always bad in reading urdu numbers.
I am amazed that Pagri system still exists. Does not that mean 99 years lease or something? What happens after 99 years?
Re: What does ‘DeRhiya’ mean?
It is 5 lakh. PKR 50,00,000 ka to Nazimabad main 3 bed + lounge / dining mil jae ga. Property prices in old city area deflated due to law and order situation in Lyari.
PagRi system is still there in old city area especially for shops:
Paperless pagri system still exists in old city areas - The Express Tribune

Thanks for sharing the article. Brought back nostalgic feelings.
Re: What does 'DeRhiya' mean?
DeoRhii [vestibule leading to the inner house] is called so because the word is derived from the Urdu word dahleez hence DeoRhii daar means the one who guards the entrance to the house [dahleez, DioRhii].
pagRii is the 'key money' is common in India, especially in Mumbai. my cousin got Rs 2 crores and a bedroom flat in Mumbai to vacate his house [where once malka e tarannum Noor JahaN lived]. a five star hotel is being constructed on that property which is close to the 'chowpatty beach'.

so are there any deRhyia flats in Mumbai?
So Madam Noorjehan was able to own a flat in Mumbai before partition. I'm reading a book on Saadat Hussain Manto, where he tells about renting a kholi (very small room) for Rs 9 per month. His income was Rs 40 per month during that time.

yes...in modern highrise residential buildings, you will find a 'STUDIO' or 'BACHELORETTE' apartment in which a bedroom has a kitchenette and a small bathroom with of course a standing shower or even a bath tub.
Noor JahaN did NOT own the apartment. it was owned by Muslim Waqf Board. when she was leaving for Pakistan, she asked her friend, my Uncle SaGheer Usmani who wrote the story and dialogues for the legendary movie 'ChaudhviN kaa Chaand'. my cousins have lived in that apartment ever since.

In our village in the Potohaar area we call such a room which is at the entrance to the house a Dehdi, that is where any guests are entertained until the ladies can go back into the womens quarters. it can be a small sitting room with a Lavatory.

I also heard same name for entrance in Sindh. So, the languages overlap.

Re: What does 'DeRhiya' mean?
Deorhi is not exactly a gate but the whole entrance area to the building, kind of like foyer or lobby of a hotel. So the Sindhi reference Dedhi sounds like Sindhi equivalent of Deorhi
