Indeed, we offered the Trust to the heavens and the earth and the mountains, and they declined to bear it and feared it; but man [undertook to] bear it. Indeed, he was unjust and ignorant.
Why men was called unjust and ignorant, when he accepted this amanah? Did he fail to fulfill the responsibility?
joh main ne padha tha us ke mutabiq, amanah (trust) se muraad ahkaam-e-shariah (amar-o-nahi, namaz, roza, zakat, hajj etc) ka mamoor hona hai jin mein poora utarne par jannat ki daayimi naimatein aur khilaaf warzi par jahannum ka azaab hai. insaan ki takhleeq se pehle yeh sawaal aasmaan aur zameen aur pahadon se kiya gaya tha ke kiya tum is amanat ka baar utha lo ge, agar mana kar do ge to nafarmaan nahi kehlao gai, lakin unhon ne mana kar dia ke agar is amanat ko zime-e-dari se na sambhala to azaab ho ga. phir jab insaan ko takhleeq kiya gaya aur us se yeh sawal kiya gaya to us ne zimedaari qubool kar li.
Last line se yeh ishaara diya gaya ha ke insaan nadaan tha ke itna bada baar utha liya lakin ise muraad tammam bani-e-nou insaan nahi balke sirf woh log hain jinhon ne is amanat ka haq ada na kiya aur nuqsaan ka shikaar hui.

lekin shariat ke ihkaam zameen o aasman ko uthane ke liye kiyun kaha gaya jab Insan ko banate waqt hi uski destination tai thi. zameen main khuda ka khalifa hona? When someone is made khalifa he got some responsibilities and duties. so Men was destined to have this trust.
My cousin used to take care of my dad's money in Pakistan. But after her situation became hard financially she asked my dad to stop, because it would get harder for her to manage the money. She feared the responsibility of the trust when she realised her position for upholding that trust could be compromised.
Bearing a trust is an honour ... But also a great responsibility ...
Mankind as indivuals throughout history have surely met this great Trust such as the Anbiya, Sahabah and Awliya ... But on the whole mankind in terms of ultimate numbers has failed the Trust.
Mankind was ignorant to his ability to meet the Trust ... Just imagine an insistent child begging to pick up the shopping bags but after a few steps they hand it back for it being too heavy ... That child was ignorant of the weight of the bag ... So the Trust in the context is a fitnah.
The injustice here is behind the seeking of the reward and putting oneself in to a state of stress and burden ... We cannot be unjust to God in real terms, but we can be unjust to our sense of being content with what Allah has already given us, but yet desire more, even if that should be born out of wanting to be closer to God. The perfect slave is dwelling contently without any Trust to bear ... Nor seeks it even when the choice presents itself. However, when given it .... It bears it with fullest might ... But will always fall short ...
As RasoolAllah (SAW) said, even he shall only enter Jannah through the Mercy of Allah and not through acts of goodness ... Mankind depends on Mercy and Tawfiq to be able to live up to the Trust. It is like saying ... "Yeah, I'll carry those bags, but can you give me some help?"

well what i read, for this verse some commentators have taken it in metaphorical / figurative sense (tamseel), like noble Quran has said elsewhere by way of comparison; "If had we sent down this Quran to a mountain, you would have seen it humbled, burst apart out of awe of Allah" (AL-Hashr 59:21). It is obvious that this example has been given as a matter of supposition-not that it was really revealed on a mountain.
But majority of Muslim scholars said it is not correct because in the verse of Surah Al-Hashr, Quran has itself made it clear that it is just a hypothetical statement. However verse of Surah Al-ahzaab is not hypothetical as it is in a descriptive style and as Allah said in Quran; "And there is not a single thing that does not extol His purity and Praise" (Al-Isra 17:44). So it is obvious that knowing Allah, realizing that he is a creator is something not possible without knowledge and consciousness. This verse proves that knowledge and consciousness do exist in all elements of creation and it is not rationally impossible that Allah could bestow on the heavens and the earth and the mountains the functional ability to verbalize and speak.
