The weather talk is becoming 'out' now
Mostly I get too affected by awkward silences. So automatically the mouth is zipped. And I start looking at my mobile, magazine or my hands.
But when I do talk then it's mostly about carrier and studies. But it depends on the age of the person I'm talking with.

the clothes, the shoes, the brands, new movie, politics/cricket/flood. aur start reading a newspaper and keep commenting.

silence is comfortable, never awkward for me... even with strangers :)

In family there never is a silence (Mashallah) unless everyone falls a sleep
With strangers, I always have book and my thoughts with me...

Food, language or culture is good one. Depends upon the situation, i ask people about "any good restaurants to eat?". Or what language do you speak etc.
