Ive given money clips, cologne, watches, wallets, shirts, ties, books, shoes, laptop bags, briefcases, etc.

It depends on his style.

What does he like? Is he a professional kinda guy? Casual? Does he like the finer things in life or is he a no-fuss type?

You can try gadgets, depending on the kind of stuff he is into. Some advice I have gotten: really nice headphones, phones (but most people like iphone better, no other phone would be good enough), consoles, something for his computer... that's all I can remember.

This year, for his birthday, I decided to go with something that he'd like but isn't budgeting for yet. So, it is something he'd like but doesn't have the money. He was reallllyyy happy when he heard about what I am thinking. If you have known him long enough, you can try that.
