I’m talking about stuff like the Wiimote, upcoming MS and Sony motion cameras and even the DS touch screen. Personally I’ve only tried the DS. The idea of the the Wii’s motion controller never appealed to me. I’ve seen some games with it. I thought it looked like a cool concept for a limited number of games, but not something I’d like to necessarily have in all my games. Even with the DS stylus, I’d prefer to play games the way I have traditionally instead of being forced to use the touch screen. Especially games that are ports/remakes of older games that were playable on consoles that didn’t have that technology.
I’ve seen the demo for Natal, MS’ motion sensing camera. While it was impressive as a technology, I’m skeptical of how it could be used well with games (in general). If they make specialized games for it then that would be fine, but I wouldn’t want to play all my games with something like that. An example of where specialized controllers made sense was with light gun games, which are basically on rail shooters. The light gun gives you an advantage since you can aim much faster with it than you could with a traditional controller. Otherwise, I prefer traditional controllers.
Re: What do you gamers think of the non-traditional controllers
i would prefer a normal controller. Wiimote could be a good thing for FPS games i guess. But IMO normal controller is more fun.
I could’ve bought DS but i didnt but it cuz of the touch screen mini games and stuff like that and bought a PSP instead.
dont like where all this motion stuff is going though
Stuff like Wiimote would be good for an on rails shooter. The aiming aspect could be improved with it, but there's more to an FPS game than simply aiming. The best controls for FPS would be keyboard and mouse as you need to also move around in FPS games along with aiming and shooting. They even said the next Halo game (Halo Reach) would not be using the Natal camera. They even said that about the next Gears of War game.
The only console that I know that allowed for the keyboard and mouse combo was the Dreamcast. XBox 360 and PS3 don't have that. Still dual analog for FPS is pretty good. I realized that when trying to play Outtrigger with the Dreamcast controller, which just had a single analog stick.
