What do you do with your old desi clothing?

I have a ton of old desi clothing i need to give away, some even that I haven’t worn or wore once or twice and no longer fit. I live in the US. what do people do with all this stuff? I don’t go “back home” too often either, and have no plans to do so in the near future. i feel bad throwing it away, because the clothes are pretty decent, and I know it’ll be useless to give it to goodwill or something similar. What do people usually do?

Re: What do you do with your old desi clothing?

send them to India / Pakistan :)

Re: What do you do with your old desi clothing?

You can send it with someone going home, or donate it to a mosque. If there aren't people willing to wear the clothes, maybe they can be cut up and used for arts and crafts projects, or for ladies learning how to sew.

Re: What do you do with your old desi clothing?

I would try to sell the stuff that's never been worn either online or in my community. I do have sisters that are always more than happy to take my clothes that are in good shape. They just resize my clothes.. I also don't like to throw clothes away and don't go back too often. Giving it away to relatives or selling it works.

Re: What do you do with your old desi clothing?

try going to your local mosque, maybe you can donate it there

Re: What do you do with your old desi clothing?

but how to send it back home? I have too many clothes to send with someone, and shipping costs are extravagant. The new clothes are a little out of fashion to sell. I have relatives that are in need of clothes back home, so I'd rather they have my new clothes, but again, don't know how to get it to them or others really in need.

Re: What do you do with your old desi clothing?

increasingly the diversity of desi comment in north america means that there are people at all income levels and those going through tough times who would otherwise not say, additionally there are groups like hamdard center that is for battered women who can use the desi clothing.

in general the community has not done a great job sharing locally (at least from my outdated and limited insights into desi service groups) but many groups do a good job of sending things overseas for people there.

if u do want to send it to family members in Pakistan, shipping costs are not too bad if u look around and choose methods that take some time.

Re: What do you do with your old desi clothing?

I send my old clothes to Pakistan through this guy who transports them via ship,so although it takes over a month, they reach there safely. It's a door to door service.

Happy to say my clothes have so far provided three yateem girls with their part jahaiz...only worn once suits, that my khala distributed.

Think there's an ad on tv too that offers reasonable rates...

Re: What do you do with your old desi clothing?

Thank you very much hun. So do they go to the address where you send them? Anywhere in Pak?

I always send a little with my dad when he goes but when there are so many of us, there's a lot more we could send if we had the ability.

Re: What do you do with your old desi clothing?

Whenever I go to Pakistan, I usually have a suitcase full of clothing I've worn once/never. My mom and dad's family is from a village near Islamabad/Rawalpindi...and we know everyone in the village, cos my grandfather used to help out the poor a lot. So when I went, i had the fortune of personally giving the stuff to young girls who were so happy. It's so gratifying, and taught me to appreciate what I have a lot more.

Donating to shelters or origanizations that help desi women is a good idea too.

Re: What do you do with your old desi clothing?

Np dear :)

yes, they will come to your home and pick your stuff up,then you give details of name/number/address anywhere in Pakistan, and they will deliver.

Then your relos distribute...

Last year in November a group of us went to Primark and bought a load of kids clothes like hats scarves gloves and hoodies, sweaters, and sent them off to Pakland. They were given to the poor in the Northern regions...so somewhere out there a bunch of kids are wearing Primark outfits :

It is soo satisfying when told how useful everything was...

Re: What do you do with your old desi clothing?

Aww that's awesome.

Yes, I'd much rather send directly and know where the things are going/that they are getting there.

Re: What do you do with your old desi clothing?

Our local mosque usually sets up events where people can donate clothes. Also depends where you are in the US, there is a organziation in the bay area of CA that takes clothes and ships them to poor and needy areas of Pakistan.

Re: What do you do with your old desi clothing?

I just put mine in the US charities like Women Another chance, Vietnam Veternas etc. that come to the door and take them. Have heard no complaints. Some masjids take clothes with no compalints, others are more fussy as how the clothes should be, they should be folded etc. Others I just cut up and use as mop rags.
