What do you do with a deceased member's belongings ?

Weird thread, I know.

But when and how do you start packing/throwing out a deceased member’s clothes, shoes, … ?
I know some people who haven’t kept a single thing and some who didn’t have the courage to do so.

My sisters and I each kept a couple of saris and other misc trinkets that had sentimental value. Her jewelry had already been divided up amongst us per instructions in her will. We then asked her sisters/nieces if they wanted anything. After that, we donated all or her business suits/Western work wear and shoes to Dress For Success, which is an organization that helps women who are victims of domestic violence or other tragedies prepare for interviewing and re entering the work force.

The few things that were left over went to Goodwill.

Re: What do you do with a deceased member's belongings ?

my sister just passed away and all her material belongings were given to the needy except few articles of clothing that were kept by my other 3 sisters as a 'nishaanii' of the deceased.

her end came unexpectedly and so fast that she didn't have a WILL. since no one knows when he/she will die, Islam encourages Muslims to have a WILL as soon as possible.

Re: What do you do with a deceased member's belongings ?

I would wait till I achieve a little bit of emotional stability before deciding of what to do with material goods. I dont want to livbe my life with my love ones' entire belonging, but I also dont want to get rid of all of them.

some things you just never give away....no matter how insignificant and useless they may appear.

Re: What do you do with a deceased member's belongings ?

Every family situation is different, so you have to go with what feels right. We did all that about 10 days after she passed away because my sister who lives in Dubai was going back to her home, and my other sis was living in NYC at the time, and also needed to go back to her job.

What do you do with a deceased member's belongings ?

Re: What do you do with a deceased member's belongings ?

I have my father's educational certificates , his achievement awards , newspaper clipping , framed couple of his writings , I still have his watch ( the one he had on him , during his last days ) and one of his favorite Tie .

Rest of his belongings were donated to the charity ..

It may sound weird but every year , I buy things for him such as unstitched clothes ( on the very same pattern he used ) and give as sadqa ...

On occasions , my mom cooks the same dishes , he liked - offer fateha and send them to mosques/people in need !

So in a way - not alive but we have managed to keep him in our lives ...

Re: What do you do with a deceased member's belongings ?

This is not weird at all. My mom also buy clothes & that too of a same kind of fabric which my grandparents used to wear to give as a sadqa.
