In some cases, the other person's intentions (whatever they might be...whether it's to hurt you...or hit on you..etc) are obvious...to the point that they're also directly perceived by others....and one might use the "concurrence" of others as a confirmation. Whether or not the individual is confronted is another issue.
And another way to seek clarification is to talk to the individual. This can confirm or dis-confirm your assumptions. The individual may be telling the truth..or they might lie. You may believe them or you may not.
I believe most of the stories posted on this forum are cooked up stories that have no truth in them.
But in online forums, the general rule is you have to believe what the person is saying and answer them assuming they are saying the truth.
