Re: what do you cook for sick folks?
kichri...delicious
Re: what do you cook for sick folks?
- Yellow moong dal and rice khichri. DOn't put any spices, just ginger and salt. Cook in home made chicken stock if available. Serve with fresh plain yoghurt for the good bacteria.
- Chicken noodle soup: make a stock [yakhni] with chicken, ginger-garlic, onion, salt and pepper and a bay leaf. You may add celery and carrots. When chicken falls off the bone, strain and put the liquid back on a pot. You could reserve some chunky chicken pieces for the soup. Bring to a boil and add noodles and some oregano. Cook until al dente.
- Toast and eggs
- Semolina upma [Queer, you should know that]
Re: what do you cook for sick folks?
Very good tips by Nikki .
Basically you only avoid the spicy stuff while trying to take food that is high nutrition and will improve immunity ... soups are good since they digest easily ... Keeping those three factors in mind, you can have any vegetable bhujia type to go with plain rice
for meat , if you dont want plain chicken stock , just slice up a small onion, fry it , quarter tsp garlic ... let the chicken fry in it ... then add the salt and black pepper ... and some methi / fenugreek ... add in loads of water and let it all cook for a while ... the gravy will be a really thin one .. it will act as soup but wont be as bland as soup ...
you can also try Pea soup , easy to make and easy to digest ...

Re: what do you cook for sick folks?
It is sooji ka namkeen halwa. I love it when it is made for healthy people though. The best I ate was made by one of my friend’s wife who is from Kerala. Yum Yum
I never asked for the recipe , in fact I never ask for recipe from anyone. I just make farm’ish to the person who makes something out of ordinary and they Alhumdulillah they oblige.
Note for TLK: That yum yum is for upma not for friend’s wife. ![]()

Re: what do you cook for sick folks?
So how was the upma?
Usually, the way we make it is fry a cup of sooji in some oil. When it turns darker, set it aside. Meanwhile, in some oil, crackle some mustard seeds, kari patta, whole red chillies, a tsp each of dry white maash [urad] daal and channa daal. Then add, chopped up mixed veggies of choice, salt and some lemon juice. Add 3 cups of water and cook until tender. Then add the bhunoed sooji into the veggies and stir until fluffy.
Re: what do you cook for sick folks?
i didnt make it yet.. saturday morning, i think. :\
i make it very similar to what you said, except we don't do any veggies with it, we add in long thin slices of ginger, and a ton of grated coconut in the end (coz hey, everything gets coconut in kerala). its a very easy dish, the only slightly tricky bit is the water amount.. add too much and you'll end up with slush. i like it when its fluffayyyy and warm, eaten with a banana. a sprinkling of sugar if you like. <3 <3 <3
Re: what do you cook for sick folks?
Oh yes, ginger is key!
