When did you start referring to your MIL & FIL by what your spouse calls them?
Did you start during the engagement period or soon after marriage or did you never make the transition?
And was the transition easy for you or quite awkward?
I’d like to call my parents in law “Ammi/Abu” but I just don’t know how to start saying it because whenever they email me or leave voicemails they refer to themselves as “auntie/uncle”.
Just don’t think about it too much.. If you feel like calling them ammi/abbu tou yeh tou achi bat hai! Just do it in your next email or reply of the next email. Trust me, they’d love to hear that from you!
Been married for quarter century, and never called my in laws "Ami/Abbu". Have a great relationship with them, but for me "Ami/Abu" are my parents. DH calls/called both my parents "Ami/Abu" and never ever asked me to address his parents the same way.
My sibs and their spouses all call their in laws "Mum/Dad/Ami/Abu" .. seems like I am the only one from my sibs and spouses who does not!
Wait until you're married and then you can transition. As your relationship progresses with them, you might want it to sound sweeter, so just add jaan with it. Like aunty jaan / mummy jaan.. Sounds cute although I refer to my MIL as mama jani and FIL as baaba.
