its really common but I have seen it happening mostly on the function of mehndi or so when a newly wed bride wears her own shadi ka lehnga or looks like a dulhan but not on the day of Rukhsati or so. My sis was wearing her lehnga on my cousin bro's mehndi w/o the doppta on her head (unlike dulhans) but I have never seen anyone else dressed up like a dulhan on the day of Rukhsati.
