Now we have an interesting turn of events! France says that they will join us in a war if Saddam uses Chemical or biologica weapons!
So now they hold out the possibility that Saddam really has these weapons? After 12 years of inspections, and the French threatening a veto, NOW they tell us that if US troops are killed by weapons that Iraq is not supposed to have, THEN they will back a war?

FRENCH U-TURN ON IRAQ WAR
France has announced it could assist any US-led military coalition if Iraq uses chemical and biological weapons.
The turnaround comes after strong French opposition to a war in Iraq, including threats to veto a UN Security Council resolution paving the way for armed conflict.
French ambassador Jean-David Levitte said: “If Saddam Hussein were to use chemical and biological weapons, this would change the situation completely and immediately for the French government.”
Mr Levitte said a decision on any French participation in the war would be made by French President Jacques Chirac, if and when biological or chemical weapons were used.
They believe that the chem weapons that US had given Iraq may still be In Saddam's possession and if he uses them France may have to act.
I think thats what the french may believe. but then who knows what the french believe, any nation that idolizes mickey rourke and jerry lewis has a problem.

Fraudz: I think you've got it wrong. The French know that Saddam still has WMD that he developed from the viral strains the FRENCH supplied him in the late 1980's. Or did you miss that item over the last several days?
The total bankruptcy of the French position in the UN couldn't be more fully exposed than this story. They obviously believe that Saddam has WMD and that he might use them in this war. Believing that, they stand up in the UN and claim that Saddam is not in violation of 1441 when he claims he doesn't have any WMD.

French govt prolly tells its citizens as much about its adventures as does any other random govt, with the exception of Lesotho and Burundi, two stellar examples.

The point of my response was the disclosure (yesterday I believe) that the FRENCH supplied Saddam with viral strains used in his WMD programs. Your post (like a lot of others) repeated the popular little gem that the US supplied Saddam with his chemical weapons. I just thoought it relevant to point out the French participation.
So now we know that France assisted Iraq with both its nuclear AND chemical weapons programs, believes Saddam still has WMD and considers it a possibility that he will use them. If you don't see anything inconsistent between that and their reluctance to declare Iraq in breach of 1441, so be it.
hey my post was written from a french perspective :) after all the title of the thread was 'what do the french believe" now ehether they believe in one gem or another i dont know. as a matter of fact, no one can say for sure what they believe in unless a statistically valid sampling of frnech citizens is taken and a surveyed to find out what they believe.
as far as chem weapons go, should France not be held liable for sellign the weapons? or was this prior to the rules barring chem weapons?
Do "I' see lack of consistency? sure i do, but does a 'french" person bel;eieve that i dunno. maybe after i have some more frnech toast, err patriot toast I will be able to get more in a frog err frnchies mindset and comment.
P.s. lighten up words liek "gems" or "like many others" would have worked if my intent was serious here.
