AM and PM appear after midnight and afternoon time respectively. Military time or 24 hour clock does not need AM and PM, because time represents in 24 hours. Civilian time based on 12 hour clock and requires AM or PM.

In grade 6 our teacher asked this question. none of us knew and they punished all of us ... so i remember it really well ..
a.m : ante meridiem
p.m : post meridiem

I never keep my watches in 12-hours time. Both out of old millitary habit of family plus it may lead to wrong setting off of Alarms :)

Punjab vs. Rest thread in Pakistan Affairs. Apparently, a poster from Lahore claim that Tandoors in Karachi serve Naans to Urdu speaking people first than rest of the ethnicity.

In the Netherlands it's normal to use 24hrs notation instead of p.m. and a.m. As a result, the few times I do have to use them, I always mix them up.

When young, I created my own meaning to remember when to use am or pm. It was simple
AM > absent morning
PM > present morning
... and then use the opposite
