What did u read growing up..

I remember we used to subscribe to Taleem-o-Tarbiat, Naunehaal and Jugnoo.. I wonder if there are more now..

7 to 12 : taleem-o-tarbeeat, chotti chotti kahaniaan (aath aanay wali)
12-16 : Ishtiaq Ahmed (Inspector Jamshed) / Ibn-e-safi (Imran Series)
16-17: MAG, Cosmopolitan (old editions bought from Kabbari bazaar) it was more of a visual aid than reading. Only read the novel at the end.
17 -18: khailLarka waghaira

hey I remember the chotti chotti kahanyaan.. man i got so sad when i used to finish them off in minutes and then long for more.. (i was a very early reader).

Mostly adventurous urdu novels by ferozsons, Istiaq Ahmad's series, and many more.

Does anyone remembers the collection of stories which used to be mostly about URDU mahawareys? They used have pictures on almost every page. I remember some of the stories were...gul-e-bekauli, gharoor ka sar neecha, khiyaali pualo, thaali ka began.....most of the stories were sabaq ammooz.....i just can't remember the name of the series :(

:rotfl: atleast you admit it..

depending o age

the english were

taleem o tarbiyat
nonehaal
bacchonki dunya
bacchon ka bagh

then i was really happy when i was graduated to urdu digest, akhbar e jahan, imran series, ibn e safi, maut ka tauqub etc.

english

anything and everything by enid blyton as a pre teen

famous five
secret seven

and then graduated to asimov, hitchcock, christite, mcclean etc about the same time i had started reading ibn e safi

FHM :hehe:

A lot of Ray Bradbury when I was younger, it worked on a level then and on a deifferent level in later years. The Martian Chronicles is still one of my favorite books.

But when I was really little the adventures if Roger Red Hat and Billie Blue Hat.

:hehe:

do u get that in the states?

"Are you there God, its's me Margaret."

For some reason I was obsessed with this book when growing up, I used to read it all the time.

i have seen guys with it yeah.. but to be honest i have subscibed to any of those silly mags…

i used to read nonehal as a kid

umm Fear Street, Babysitter's Club, Sweet Valley High, Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys...

taleemotarbiat - I loved that picture section .. sent in by the readers of the mag , nonehaal , US .

babysitter club and sweet valley :D

those thin urdu story books with stories like

Billi ki gardan may ghanti
Gul Baqaoli
Jaisi karni waisi bharni
Laalach buree balaa haiy
Jo darr gaya woh marr gaya (*ing reema)

english (school stuff which was shoved down my gullet):
ronald readout (class 2)
uncle tom's cabin
arthur and his seal (or something like that)

Enid Blyton (all 50 of em kiddie ones) - all time fav was the enchanted forest with Jo Billy Hannah and Dick. Bimbo and Topsy were nice and Naughty Amelia Jane i could never get. Mr Pink Whistle was alright.

TINTIN!! All of their series except TINTIN IN THE LAND OF THE INCA (which i have never been able to find anywhere - apparently it is a very rare one)

anybody remember FUNLINE? it was a kiddie magazine which came out in karachi in 1990. it was a good mag but they couldnt get enough subscription or feedback so they died down 2 years later. anyhoo i really liked it.

some books that i can never forget
Dont Hang About by Brian Keany (story a son of irish immigrants to growing up as a teen in london in early 70s)
My Family and Other Animals by Gerrald Durrel (popular naturist dude on his life as a 12 year old and his colourful childhood living in greece)
Pearls, Girls and Monty Bodkin (forgot the author) but nice gatsby era book
The Chrysalids by John Wyndham (ok so it was a text book but i loved it as a novel!)

We were so poor that after we got our eyes we only read the newspapers that the chanay came in from the street vendor.
