What comes first? Punjabi race or Punjabi language?

A Punjabi could be described as:

  • one who belongs to Punjabi race, or
  • one who speaks Punjabi

**So what defines “Punjabi”? **

By the way, I am using this case only because this is what most Pakistanis belong to, or are concerned about. The question, however, is more broad. Historically, Arabs have been a single race, but today being “Arab” is defined by the language alone. Thus a Hejazi, a Sudanese, a Syrian, and a Moroccan are all considered Arabs now. On the other hand, many “Syeds” who don’t speak Arabic are not considered Arab anymore.

Re: What comes first? Punjabi race or Punjabi language?

Language.

There is no Punjabi race, Punjabis were always mixed, some Punjabis are even racially similar to people from other ethnicities such as Punjabi Rajputs to Rajasthanis.

Punjabis are racially mixed anyway, language being the main componenet of culture defines ethnicity, ethnicity is our culture, race is pretty much irrelevant today.

Take Jatts and Rajputs, they were orginally different races before they intermixed with the locals but now they're both Punjabi tribes, my Pashtuns are also a mixture of Aryan, Turkic, Semitic and Dravidian stock.

Hmm....intresting.

Re: What comes first? Punjabi race or Punjabi language?

I also think that Punjabis is the language one speaks and not the race. Punabis are very mixed people, just like Sindhis. And this is why they look quite different even from each other.
I remember an article on Mirza Qaleech Baig. He is considered a Sindhi, even though he was just a second generation Iranian. His father could not even speak Sindhi.
Look at Qadir Magsi of Jeay Sindh. He is originally Baloch, but he now considers himself a Sindhi.

What I want to say is that races and nationalities don't mean much. What unites Pakistan is the religion, not race.

Re: What comes first? Punjabi race or Punjabi language?

I speak punjabi.
And I dont give a damn.
So did my pathan friends told me that their are some real pathans and the some
"aalaqai" (because the live in nwfp and speak pushto)

So every one has almost same thing going on in their areas.

But some shallow people want to take pride from what ever they can.

Re: What comes first? Punjabi race or Punjabi language?

Punjabis are the only race/people/language in the world whose name is derived from another language...They don't even have name for themselves...

Re: What comes first? Punjabi race or Punjabi language?
