What changes you want to see?

I am not the sort of fan who would start criticizing players unnecessarily after a defeat or would start worshipping them after a victory. Whenever we win we tend to ignore our weak points and whenever we lose we don’t learn from our mistakes. This is something which I have always seen in Pakistan cricket since the time I started following it passionately back in 1986.

I think we all will agree that Pakistan cricket is facing it worst crisis due to our political situation. Teams don’t want to visit Pakkstan. On top of that we don’t have competitive foreign tours on ICC FTP. Our cricket is facing all kinds of controversies every week. All this is already too disheartening for the fans. Last thing we need is our team not performing well. It is integral for the survival of cricket in Pakistan that atleast our team continues to perform well on the field (whenever they get a chance to play cricket).

What changes do you think should be made in the next few months in our team? How the new administration can shake up things for the betterment of our team?

In my opinion, Misbah should be made the captain atleast of the test squad. Yes he is getting old and might not be playing cricket in the next 3-4 years. But if things are planned properly, we might train a deputy under him to take over once he retires. Malik should be kept away from the test squad. We should say good bye to Shoaib AKhtar once and for all. I think it is better for him as well as for Pakistan cricket. PCB should immediately start looking for introducing new talents in the bowling department from the academy.

I don’t want all this to happen because of the defeat in today’s final. My opinion would have remained the same even if Pakistan had won the final.

So what changes you would like to see?

Re: What changes you want to see?

What changes I want to see for the better? Maybe it is not in conjunction with the rest, but I would still like to see Shoaib Malik as the deputy. And yes, I will catch flak for this as much as I can. When was the last time Pakistan played a test match (metaphorically speaking)? This year? I see a recent surge in Pakistan team and I see Shoaib Malik behind that. He has been leading the team with his bowling and batting both. Even though he fails to take the team all the way past the finish line which is, in part, not entirely his fault. But without bringing in anyone else, I think Shoaib Malik has been doing a reasonably good work as a captain of the team, and we have seen it in this T20 and a little bit in the Asia Cup. He looked determined and team played well. What message are we sending across if we made Misbah captain, really? Firstly, I don't understand why he is chosen as the vice-captain of the team, that makes little sense. If you have to take the bull by the horns, either make him captain or give someone else the responsibility of the vice-captain. But the sad part is, no one else fits the profile. Kamran Abbasi and rest are bringing up the names of Afridi as vice-captain, and why? The guy has been in and out of his mind. He performed brilliantly under Bob Woolmer but since then, his batting performance have declined. He rarely clicks which is besides the point.

Besides Shoaib and Misbah, there is no logical choice for another captain. Between the two, I believe Shoaib Malik did bring up aggressive tactics in T20 cup, and I hardly saw any defensive mechanisms deployed. Misbah can bring a lot to the table, but I am not convinced that with him being an "automatic" entry into the test squad is good enough to remove Shoaib Malik from the lead. His captaincy is not that bad of a material.

For the life of me, I don't understand why can't Younis Khan be the darn captain and put us out of this misery. He should be the one leading the team. Nevertheless, I fully support Younis Khan over both of these contenders.

Re: What changes you want to see?

  1. Shoaib Malik as Opener
  2. Misbah as Captain
  3. Bye Bye of Lawson...

You are kidding me. You need wholesale changes?

Re: What changes you want to see?

:chai:

Misbah or Younis as captain.
Butt and Jamshed as permanent openers.
Imran Khan chairman PCB.

Do all the above and see how our team becomes one of the best again, hopefully. :snooty:

Re: What changes you want to see?

For ODI:

  • Shoaib Akhtar out
  • Misbah as Captain
  • Nasir Jumshaid in

Are you sure you don’t want Afridi as opener? :aq:

you got to be kidding.. Malik has been pathetically uninspiring when it comes to bowling. It has been pretty obvious that the guy was reluctant to bowl against quality batting and in crunch situations. And then not letting new comers to bowl against sides like Zimbabwe and Bangladesh to get some experience or exposure.

Several experts have criticized him for this so called strategy which I think should be called his insecurity. The guy clearly is not willing to give newcomers a chance to bat or bowl in matches most of the times whenever there has been an oppotunity and instead giving hinself more overs and sending himself up the order.

This is what Akram said about him:

"As a leader and as a player he has to be positive. In the beginning I thought he had the skills; now I have my doubts. Against Zimbabwe he bowled ten overs in almost every match, against Bangladesh he bowled a little less. But in big matches he is not bowling. Do you think nobody notices? People do. Most of all, players notice how the leader is doing. "

I am sure alot of people will come up with anti Akram statements about his own antics but just think what he is saying. He is right on the money here.

Sorry DB but I don't think bragging about 12 consecutive wins against sides like Zimbabwe and BD and then doing a lap of honour in Lahore after beating Zimbabwe 5-0 is anything close to being a determined or inspirational captain. His only inspiring performance was probably his stint during T20 cup and that was it. Everything went downhill from there.

I guess PCB should have made Misbah the captain but I guess they wanted to test him more before giving him the opportunity.

I guess Afridi's role in an ODI side is mainly as a bolwer and that has been the case for the last many years when he matured as an intelligent ODI bowler. Another reason for his constant inclusion in the side is probably lack of a quality allrounder since Razzaq was out of the equation and Shoaib malik decided to change his role from an allrounder to a specialist batsman. Had Malik opted to become a reliable allrounder, PCB would have dropped Afridi long time ago from their ODI squad. As far as Test matches go, there is no slot there for Afridi or for Malik. I don't how people can consider him a specialist test batsman.

Imran khan in his last interview which he gave a week ago … said …
His cricketing era has end … n now he is just politician … :hinna:

:snooty:

nah …afridi shud come down the order..

Khan Sahab -

Let's take this one step further and I will add that it is completely fair for both of us - and others - to point at Malik especially when he is reluctant to give a chance to youngsters. Sometimes with his tactics of not giving the ball to the new inclusions, he reminds me of Inzamam and the reluctance to see the change in the team, for better or for worse. But after Asia Cup and only in this T20, I see a different leader, someone who has been inspiring with his performances, batting and bowling. I see your point and realize that even the youngsters who were included in the team were not given a fair amount of exposure, but from Malik's point of view, he has been doing an adequate job of performing. If he was not performing as captain, I would have thought otherwise.

Totally fair. I also believe Malik's strategy to use Sohail Khan by playing defensive and have him and Afridi bowl a full quota of overs was unfair. One over of Sohail Khan, three overs of Rauf and two overs of Anwar Ali against Zimbabwe (which, regardless of the result, would have been very good opportunities to test them all out fully). Yes, it is all noticed.

And regardless of the time PCB plans to test him out or anyone else, I am not convinced what Misbah will bring to the table will have any huge difference between now - Shoaib Malik - and then. I still want to see what Shoaib Malik can do and series against Bangladesh and Zimbabwe are not a benchmark to access the captaincy.

Well its not that I am asking for Shoaib’s omission after T20, I have been pretty consistent with this demand. To me he is more of a liability. He is disturbing team’s balance and disipline both

I agree that series against BD or Zimbabwe should not be a benchmark of success for any captain. Every captain should get a fair chance to demonstrate their abilities, BUt what if the captain itself is not a test match material and doesn't deserve to be in the test team??

I fail to convince myself that Shoaib Malik is a cricket player who should be in a test squad. And there is nothing wrong about one not being a test standard player. Alot of far better players from various countries are not part of their test squad but are regular members of their ODI or T20 teams where they replace even more accomplished test players.

I think Malik should be part of our ODI (provided he is there as an allrounder) and T20 team. ANd I don't mind him being the captain then. And make Misbah the captain of the test squad. Yes Younis should be an ideal choice but we know the history about Younis Khan and captaincy.

Agreed and

  • Ayub AKhtar given a chance too.
  • Sarfaraz replacing Akmal

We did well in 2008 ODIs: Malik

KARACHI: Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik believes that his team mostly shined in whatever cricket it played in what was quite a dismal 2008 for national players.

Malik’s men did not play a single Test this year but did feature in 21 One-day Internationals, winning 18 of them. Pakistan also won a triangular tournament in Bangladesh, involving old rivals India and the hosts.

“We didn’t play any Tests this year but our performance in one-day games was good,” he told reporters after leading Punjab Stallions almost in the final of the Pentangular Cup One-day Championship final with thrilling victory against Balochistan Bears here at the National Stadium. Malik hit an unbeaten 108 in the high-scoring match.

Twelve of Pakistan’s ODI wins this year came against lowly Bangladesh and Zimbabwe but Malik said he was pleased with his team’s showing in 2008.

“As captain I’m satisfied with my team’s performance this year,” he said. “Most of our players did well in whatever matches we played in 2008.”

He was happy with his own form in the ongoing domestic contest and hoped to continue it in 2009.

We did well in 2008 ODIs: Malik

yes we know that Pakistan didn’t lose much games in 2008 but beating crappy teams and blabbering about is also not a very bright thing to do. If I am not mistaken it is probably the 3rd or 4th time Malik has done this. Coming this yet again from a captain who had the nerves to do a winning lap against Zimbabwe after beating them 5-0 just boils my blood.

Fine you didn’t play much so just keep your mouth shut or just say something like we didn’t much games and whatever and whoever we played was not significant enough to pass a verdict on our performance.

Re: What changes you want to see?

Malik's 'review' is in two weeks, can you believe it? Time flies so quickly. We should have a discussion with a poll to gather the views whether Malik should be retained or we need a new captain. Maybe a poll in a week's time.

Thanks for mentioning about Malik review on December 31st. Actually his recent statement is probably his attempt to remind the board of his "good" performance as a captain and to convince the board to renew his tenure.

Lets have a poll on that next week.
