What are you reading?

Re: What are you reading?

Thanks Doll!

Re: What are you reading?

it says anchor books on the paperback I have.

this guy is so beyond alchemist and whatnot. there is such philosophy in what he writes and how he writes it.

Re: What are you reading?

Aww..I came into the thread for the same but since I found nothing interesting thought to share what I am reading. Out of the two listed, the beginning and the end is hands down one of the best books I have read in a while. Whereas the Holy Woman has appeal simply because it focuses on a family in Pakistan. This book I just started half an hour ago looks to be promising:

“Ali and Nino” is the story of an Azerbaijani youth who falls in love with a Georgian princess. Essentially, the book is a quest for truth and reconciliation in a world of contradictory beliefs and practices – Islam and Christianity, East and West, age and youth, male and female. Much of the novel is set in Baku’s Old City (Ichari Shahar) on the eve of the Bolshevik Revolution beginning around 1917–1918. The novel was first published in 1937, in a foreign country (Austria), in a foreign language (German), by someone using the pen name of Kurban Said (Gurban Said, in Azeri).

(BTW I think this is a much better way to post what you are reading…with the image of book as well and a short review)

Re: What are you reading?

Yeh the Holy Woman jsut turned me off after I read the synopsis on amazon. Reminded me of the old dramas like Marvi and such that focus on Sindh and the whole marrying to the Quran ritual.

I'm just picked up Breakfast at Tiffany's for a quick two hor read and then I think I'm going to try one of the last two books you mentioned.

PS scrounge the thread - lots of interesting books mentioned. What genre are you in the mood for?

Re: What are you reading?

For everyone who has not yet done so, read the Cairo Trilogy by Naghuib Mehfouz

The three novels are, in order:

The books’ Arabic titles are taken from actual streets in Cairo, the city of Mahfouz’s childhood and youth. The first novel. *Bein el-Qasrein, is named after a street where the protagonist, and his family live, the second, *Qasr el-Shoaq, is named after a street where his eldest son Yasin and his family live, whereas the third, *El-Sukkareyya, is named after a street where his daughter Khadijah and her family live

***The trilogy follows the life of the Cairene patriarch Al-Sayyid Ahmad Abd al-Jawad and his family across three generations, from 1919 – the Egyptian Revolution against the British colonizers – to the end of the Second World War in 1944. The three novels represent the three phases of the Cairene socio-political life, a panorama of Egypt, through the life of Abd al-Jawad and his children and grandchildren.

Re: What are you reading?

why? are you referring to the parts where the writer portrayed some characters contacting dead people?

Re: What are you reading?

nahi ..mainay 2008 main perha tha..ab itnee tafseel say yaad nahi lakin mujhay woh resons yaad hain jis per mainay is ko Aceones k napasand honay ka kaha hai

mujhay maloom hai raja giddh Adab ki dunia main bohat bara naam rakhta hay ..or perhnay k dermiyaan bohat say aysay maqaam hain jahan main bohat mutaasir bhi hoye jaisai rizq-e-halal or haraam ki jo is main philosphy samjhayee zabardast thee

lakin rohaaniyat per writer ki tehqqeq bohat kam hai or is cheez main mujhay afsos hai ..woh insaaf nahi ker paayen...or i dont know k yeh adab ka taqaza hay ya kia ...alfaz ka khula pan or baybaak manzar kashi is sub say tabiyaat or zeyhan per acha assar nahi perta ...
