What are you reading?

Re: What are you reading?

I had no idea about this book. Thanks for sharing.

Re: What are you reading?

I have always been facinated by political dynasty families...after reading my way through the Kennedys', Nehru/Gandhis'...I started on the Bhuttos after Benazir's death. I discovered Fatima's journalistic articles for various news websites and am a big fan of hers..however, I found "Songs of Blood and Sword" to be a very one sided "hero worship" view of Murtaza and his life...which is understandable! I still enjoyed the book, and love her style of writing..it's always good to see a different side....

(PS...I know next to nothing about Pakistani polictics, as I am US born and raised, and my family has no political leanings either way! I'm just curious and love to read about fascinating people!)

Re: What are you reading?

Age of spiritual machines
Ray kurzweil
Im not sure of the genre - philosophy i guess

Its basically talking about the concept of singularity. And what this concept entails is that humans and machines will become a single entity. In fact you can see this happening right now. Case in point - plastic surgery. The idea that humans could become anything that you want them to be also. Technology is progressing so rapidly that it looks like its headed for that direction. I mean think about the 80s - computers (and i mean the huge gigantic things not what we have today, was a huge thing) The idea of iphones, ipods and was farfetched to say the least. 30 years down the line and look at where we are. I was watching something the other day, a lady was having some kind of chip inserted in her that freezes nerves to eliminate pain. Also, Ray kurzweil is a scientist - and he has made some pretty bold predictions that have some true. Google the singularity concept its pretty interesting but deep stuff.

Re: What are you reading?

The Power of Now - Eckhart Tolle

on one hand i'm such a skeptic and want to label his concept of happiness as glorified denial and irresponsible, on the other hand i'm extremely curious if this is actually what being happy is. so annoying. i like the idea of calming the mind of random and negative thoughts, and making the mind work for you than vice versa. anyone else read this or any of his other books and have an opinion?

Re: What are you reading?

I've read it. Was going through a pretty tough time last year and a friend suggested it to me. Though reading it did calm me in some ways, it's extremely hard to get that desired effect of constantly being in the now, where you don't let things affect you. But the breathing exercises and some other things in there definitely do have a calming affect. It's always a work in progress trying to reach that state, but overall reading the book definitely had a very positive outcome.
