If one forgets about the SO for the rest of the year then there will be no one around next valentine’s day to vent celebrate it with. The purpose is not to fake or force something on that day, but to reflect upon your feeling for that person that you have on regular basis.
Now expectation part, I agree is not good. But valentine’s day activities should never be arranged as a surprise for the other party. It’s a day for him, but a day for you too, so the arrangements should be mutual, so really no pressure.
