What are these double standards?

SO I like, rather LOVE listening to music…all kinds of it, but I’ve been told that it is haraam and, if one must listen, then stick to ghazals. Excuse me? DOn’t ghazals talk about ishq and sharaab? Ummm, what’s with these double standards?

My question is NOT about whether music is haraam or not but about how ghazals are purer than non ghazals.

Re: What are these double standards?

I will guess and say someone from India/Pakistan told you to stick to ghazals? Islam is universal. Never heard an American muslim scholar say "Music is to be avoided, but stick to country music or jazz".

It's the skewed mentality that comes with origin, unfortunately. You are rewarded for your intention, and the act that takes place after the intention. I'm no scholar, but I don't think listening to Ghazal is any safer a bet than say Rock or whatever have you.

Case in point, If listening to music at home stops you from going to a drug-infested rave where alcohol flows freely, then how you used music has stopped you from indulging in further sin. If music makes you want to go out and smoke a phat blunt, then music has led you toward sin.

Allah knows best.

Re: What are these double standards?

Afshi, I think what 12345678910 above said is the logic that this person was working with. I should have asked though!
