I think to be extremism of any kinds start when you start looking at people from your own lens. I grew up as a muslim in pak/KSA and my value system is different from a person who is white and grew up in canada for example. I can not take our my moral compass and judge that person because wats immoral to me might be perfectly moral for him and vice versa. Extremism is just a form of ignorance when we think that our set of belief is the high and mighty and everyone else who is not following it is the cavity on the backside.

This is a very good question:
After dealing with many extremists I have come to conclusions about a few things:
a) They are often impatient people, they don't have time to listen only time to speak
b) They are aggressive - either verbally or physically
c) They are secretive and will tell you things that they have heard and not necessarily learnt through academic study
d) They are on the whole exclusive and as a result do not show signs of humility
e) Emotional and fuel emotional responses
f) They name call when they are intellectually defeated - saying that "you are such and such" and by so doing can remove themselves the responsibility of evaluating what you have said.
g) In their personal circles they have bad manners but hide this with their seriousness when in public. They don't believe that they have bad manners though.
h) They will be selective with their references
As for entertaining them - it is better to avoid them - because they are out for an argument - but if they pin you down - get as much of your own understanding to them and take away the least from them and leave.

What about continuing to proselytize when someone is not interested? I was stuck with a cabbie in NJ for 30 mins.I was fairly new in the country. He was a desi and seemed rather mild at first . He then enquired abt my country anr religious background and then started about the greatness of his religion Even after I implied I was not interested he continued on and on. I was really scared. The whole ordeal gave me a massive headache. Ofcourse I won't tolerate such nonsense now.

when they say kill non muslims and they start looking down on people based on what religion they hold.
i know this aunty jee , her views freak me out sometimes. Every issue being discussed ,she believes being violent is solution to everything like for instance once time she said "beat ur wife if shes buri kirdar ki or dis-obedient" O.o .ok.and she doesnt use detol because it has a logo that looks like a cross? idk she says so rotfl.

IMHO, religious extremism is when someone is unable to critically discuss religion without going off into rants about how beautiful religion is and we should all just accept it. To me, that's someone who doesn't think for themselves and just accepts what an imam or particular interpretation of the Quran tells them. Hence, they are ready to accept false promises and blame others for their misfortunes.
I've seen a few people like that on this forum. They are just not interested in a debate or conversation, they just want to reiterate their views and will not budge for a second. That's extremist.
