So who was behind getting him killed? I am sure there are all sorts of conspiracy theories behind that.

The americans wanted the american ambassador to Pakistan to be killed. hence they killed Zia along with the ambassador

it was either the CIA or it was benazir, who ever did it did a wonderful job and saved pakistan from sadam hussain part 2.

I have to agree with ehsan and suhaib here, but I dont think it was Benazirs doings, it was something far bigger than that. Imagine if Zia was around for the nineties... Scary thought indeed.

not old enough to remember his rule, but have only heard about it, and people say never should you rejoice over some1’s death but over his death people even gave out mithai!

2) CIA
3) Both in cahoots

The only people to have access to his plane in Bahawalpur were ISI. The only people who knew about his trip were ISI. A junior officer in the ISI (can't remember the name) took it upon himself to pack in the mango crates etc.

The US had a lot of influence in the ISI. The reason Zia insisted that the US embassador comes with him on the return journey was to protect himself as he suspected something. He virtually forced the embassador to come with him.

General Akhter A-Rehman suspected Zia was about to bring in some changes and he wanted to discuss with the embassador. So he forced himself on the flight !

Seems like it was done by the Junior officers in ISI under the instructions of CIA - the embassador was not made aware of the plan.
