So middle son was sent home from school sick yesterday. High fever (102.8) but no other complaint - throat and ears ok, no nausea. I gave him motrin, fever broke and he slept lots thru the night, drank some water and some OJ…
then this morning he felt warm but was complaining of nausea so I held off on the motrin thinking he’d just puke it up. Then he ran for a puke bucket, started puking and then passed out cold!! O.M.G.
I called 911, ambulance and police came. Checked him out - no seizure, no appendicitus so they said just go to doc which we did…doc said that this can happen sometimes - its called a vaso-vargas response. Its a nasty virus, keep him hydrated, keep on with the motrin, keep him resting till better.
That all happened like 4 hours ago and I’m still all shaky. WHAT a horrible thing to see your child pass out like that.
Oh man, that must have been so scary! Glad to know he's OK.
MO3, I used to have this vaso vargas response as a child...my parents are both physicians and you'd expect me to be more with the program but I used to pass out anytime I had a little prick of a blood test or any prolonged exposure at the hospital. I'm over that now of course, but I cannot even begin to count how many times I passed out as a child :D
lol, it surely scared the pants off me!! I'm finally starting to calm down a bit...when I was telling my mom about the whole thing, we even got a few giggles out of it...sick little guy on the couch, sick and scared, 2 big dogs woofing their heads off at the back door, 2 other boys yelling "HI POLICE OCCIFER! HI AM-Blee-ance guy!! Whats that on your belt? Whats your name? Is that your amblee-ance? Does it have a loud siren? Who is that talking on your radio? Can I play talk to them?..." on and on while mama is freaking out but trying to seem calm, they're asking questions and trying to hear my responses...it was just nuts. One of those days that are just so bad that its almost like a comedy.
I can imagine how scary it is at that point when you have no idea what’s happening.
Here’s my scary story. A couple of years ago, when my older daughter was 4, her dad was out of town on work one weekend, we were still fairly new in this city (and state), and my 4 year old had a basic cold. So we were just painting that Saturday afternoon and killing time and after we were done, I decided to give the girls a bath. I noticed a weird looking rash on her back, thought it may be paint-related and got them ready. Within a few hours, I noticed more such rashes on her arms and legs and tummy. They were definitely not chicken pox, but were raised and red. So I called the doctor on call via our regular clinic and they said I should just watch and report back if she develops a fever. Then she started complaining of pain in her joints so I picked her up and she screamed. She said it hurt when her knees touched me. Oh man did I get a scare so I called the doctor back and he asked me to go to the ER. I rushed there and they did a whole bunch of tests on her. Meanwhile she continued to break out in rashes and now her knees and ankles were so swollen that she wouldn’t fit into her shoes. My husband casually called from out of town but I didn’t tell him anything and kept telling I’d call him back as the kids were cranky and were trying to sleep!
Eventually, the docs came back saying it’s a viral. This is her body’s response to this virus and that the only treatment is benadryl for the rash and ibuprofen for the inflammation round the clock. I was also asked to rub her with a cold pack for the itching and avoid scratching as that could flare the inflammation.
That was the hardest night for me as I had a 1 year old and this really sick 4 year old. She started getting better the very next day but was completely healed in 2 weeks.
When my husband returned on Sunday evening, he had no idea until my daughter herself told him about her exciting trip to the hospital…and when he tried carrying her, instead of getting comfort, she had tears of pain.
Its been quite a day man. I went to pick up eldest at school and some classmates were asking about middle son. and I was telling them that yeah he's sick and the am-blee-ance came ... SO embarrassing, the boyz have been saying it that way all day long and now its STUCK and I'm saying it too!!!!!
Wow I just got married and come here ocassionally and get scared about having kids. You guys really are warriors! Mo3 hope ur son is doing much better.
Well, Icono, I dunno if I'm strong or what, but MO3 will agree with me that when push comes to shove, you suddenly develop this amazing sense of courage.
