WEP Key?

Where would I find it? I am trying to wirelessly connect my nephew’s PS3 to internet (wifi), and it’s asking me for the WEP key? I tried the code provided on the router, but it didn’t work (the code was a long series of letters and numbers).

Re: WEP Key?

you must have made a mistake in typing , it is that long string you typed , it is so long and cryptic that is why it is easy to make a typing mistake

Re: WEP Key?

Its so stupid when routers are given with the WEP key on them lol.

Re: WEP Key?

What kinda router is it? Usually (if its not a service provider router) you need to get into the configuration page to get the wifi password.

Re: WEP Key?

try the default password, search online your router name & model .. access it through directly wan connected pc.
search string “name model default password”

or just reset it.

Re: WEP Key?

There is no default WEP key on any router

Re: WEP Key?

Tofi is right. No router has any WEP key printed on it. They only have the default username and password for the login console, not the wep or wpa keys.
The code you got off the router was probably the serial number of the product.

You have to talk to the person who set up the WIFI network at your place. If you dont know who set it, then I guess the only way to do it would be to reset the router to default, and re-establish the wifi settings, creating a new password.

Re: WEP Key?

Actualy the cable/FIOS routers/boxes given out by ISP’s in the USA do have WEP keys on them on a sticker.
What I meant with what I said was that you don’t have a default WEP key by manufacturer, e.g. 2 Linksys routers will never have the same WEP key by default.

Re: WEP Key?

If it’s Belkin, your gateway to router config page is 192.168.2.1.

If it’s Linksys, your gateway ip is 192.168.1.1.

You type that ip address in the web address bar, and it takes you to the Router Configuration page.

This will allow you to go into security settings and change/reset the password.

You can also reset the whole router to factory defaults by just pressing the reset button on the router. This will wipe out password or any settings you may have set on the router.

^ he knows too much! :hmmm: someone take care of him.

On a serious note, this password sticker thing is a dumb idea but a seemingly popular one. Shows how thick people can be at times.

Re: WEP Key?

normally when you got router + modem setup by Verizon/comcast they use the s/n as default wep key, i was referring to that.
on the other hand if home user setup the wireless themselves most of the times they don’t change default router password (not wep key) which can be change by logging through default ip for router 192.168.0.1 etc.

Re: WEP Key?

Or in some cases, SN is admin password to the modem/router web interface. I know AT&T does that.

Re: WEP Key?

Mine is on the router but yea my brother changes it at times so best to ask person who set it up for you.

Re: WEP Key?

correct, some routers like linksy came with default wep key printed on label , like 1111, so dumb users could connect straight out of the box.

Re: WEP Key?
