what i found most disturning was looking the owners of these huge houses and villas. Seeing these rich, educated, high class morons throwing garbage bags on the street right across their houses. And ofcourse the whole street would be stinking but ahhh as long as it is not in their house, they are all happy inside closed doors.
That is the case with every other developing country in the world, that's why they are caled developing and not developed... you should see the Indians sharing their experiences.
It varies from city to city. For example, if you're in Islamabad, expect a lot of hugs. If you're going to school, and there are 86 boys in a class of 100, you will typically hug 85 people everyday, some with very optimistic ideas about how nice they smell and coincidentally very generous with their hugging time, and unfortunately none of them will be from the interesting 14. As I understand it, most national assembly meets start off late for this reason. In nwfp, you are taking on a very big risk if you walk into town wearing bermuda shorts. One of my friends suffered extreme emotional trauma doing that. Lahoris are always eating and feel very proud of that fact for some reason. It is said that je lahore nai takiya te some lahori will bug the crap out of you, and will remind you of phajjay ke payay over and over and over. They also get heartbroken if someone doesnt like the payay. Karachi wallas are just as proud of their city as Lahoris, only we demonstrate this pride by regarding the rest of Pakistan as one big deyhaat, and imagining that nobody can spit paan out and talk like taporis as sophisticatedly as us. There is never a sadder karachiite than one at a musha'ira in sialkot.

Would you sinlge out any single part of this world where these things don't happen? Is there any? Nopes i am in the most developed nation in the world but here u know the ratio of demolished social system..What's the ratio of rapes and what happened after Katrina..what happened in Indonesia after tsunami or there are thousands of examples which i can dig in but i guess We have odds and evens everywhere in this world...Unfortunately this whole world is heading towards materialisation so as pakistani's..Yet i agreed there were some news about kidnapping of kids and young girls...but don't cover the big spirit of the people with few individuals...It's everywhere either New Orleans or Muzaffarabad.
Now as far as Bermuda's are concerned, there is a famous saying...
"When you go to Rome, do what Roman's do".
I still agreed we need to improve a lot but still feel there is still a good number of people who care in some way or other but they do...might be i m too optimistic but i am as i have seen, felt and heard the passion of those people.
Don’t pulls others shorts when your own short is falling, simple. What happened after Katrina is similar to what happened after the big train collision/accident in Ghotki (?). Our own morals are down, don’t criticise others to make/feel better.
Where else would u get to see all this.. families of eight stuffed inside a rickshaw, or being offered samosas and pakola at a dukaan in Tariq road as u sift thru the thousands of designs and saris modelled by the men who are selling them... or people sitting on the roof of a moving healvily decorated bus.. Nowhere.. Hence the exp is priceless...
1) Well like some mentioned the 6 or 7 ppl on one motorcycle, in Lahore.
When we get to the airport, relatives are there to greet us…anywhere from 5-10 of them…and then they precede to hug u all at the same time, leaving u squished and ur cheeks bruised for the next few days.
3) Seeing animals poo in the middle of roads (i was only 5 that time!)
4) Seeing animals sacrificed in my Chachu's back garden on Eid (i was terrified!)
5) I remember falling into like a big hole in the *gali* which i never saw coming, and my cousins just stood there laughing at me, while i thought i was never gona get out of it (i was 9)
6) And on my latest trip (last year) i was in Fortress Stadium and some guy pinched my bum! I was so cross and after that my cousins kept me between them haha!
Also like someone said, the way guys stared at me…and some even followed me (when i was waiting to meet the rest of family)
8) Of course, the beggars...esp. the ones who clung to me and started crying :(
9) The first time i saw the *hole in the floor* toliet (9 yrs old)...i almost started crying, cos i thought i wud fall into that stinky thing!
Bathing in a whole room instead of a tub…which i found to be really fun cos i cud make as many splashes as i wanted
Seeing my first Pakistani bride (at age 9) I had seen some before but don’t remember those…so this was my bhabi (cousin’s wife)…with all her makeup, clothes and jewellery…i was facinated with her and thought she was beautiful and looked like a princess :Pretty:
Also last year, when i had to get my clothes made at this boutique in Anarkali Bazaar, i cudn’t believe there was some guy who was measuring me…and it wasn’t just like height, waist etc…he did my chest and i was looking at my relatives like hello? Can he do this! I duno, i just wasn’t expecting it in Pakistan…but my Mum said, hota hai…and that there r 2 ppl u can’t hide ur body from: ur doctor and ur tailor…i was like great but lol, my cousins were impressed that even though i was brought up outside of Pakistan that i was still offended that a strange man was touching me! I told them wot makes me uncomfortable can be in any country
And the last thing i can remember is the traffic…how rickshaws make so much noise and was amazed at how many of us can fit in there…how ppl keep one hand only for the horn…i loved those big, bright colourful buses…and last yr, seeing my Mamu from England, attempt to drive the streets of Lahore…lol, he was being a gentleman and letting everyone get in front of him…until my cousin told him that’s not gona work here, and then Mamu started driving like a maniac and i thought we were seriously gonna die!
In Karachi, while having a stop over I was being driven around by a friend. For the fist time I saw a large man hole in the middle of the round about since someone had stolen the cover, probably to sell and make money. It is the poverty that drives people to that extreme. Strange thing is that eveyone was avoiding it and the traffic was moving pretty smoothly. I am sure some poor unsuspecting folk had fallen into it and gotten hurt. But thats Karachi for you.
In Islamabad I saw that almost all the stairs and pathways around supermarlets were broken and thats the way they had been for a while. Unused and torn down concrete block were stren about on the grassy areas. Steps were uneven and unless you are really paying attention you could easily trip on them . NO one seemed very busy.
Ah in Lahore. The scenes in Lahore never end. In lahore, as KashmiriRainDrops has said above, almost at every traffic light there was about 3-10 beggars at the windows of the car immediately. Most of them making sad faces on purpose and some really handicapped. I am sure the sad faces had quite a bit of truth to them also. And if you give them anything less than Rs. 10 then they dont even thankyou. In fact I saw one guy just frown at me and look at the money and walk away.
First we were in Islamabad and that was fine, normal toilets and all. But then we travelled to Kotli and it was terrible. Huge holes in the road. The van was bumpin up and down practically the entire route. But after a while, when I got used to that, I paid attention to the beautiful Kashmiri landscapes. They were breathtaking. I've never seen any place so beautiful.
But when we arrived in Kotli, there were dusty roads and the shops seemed weird, garage doors. Then came one of the biggest shocks when we entered our families home, a hole in the floor serving as a toilet. That is one of the things I never got used too and neither did my brothers.
And what was also shocking was this, when you go outside you get stared at in a bad manner by males as if they've never seen a female before, it was double shocking people were this way, because all my life I used to read different urdu qaiday, with nice stories about naiq people in Pakistan and I figured everyone was like that, especially since our parents fed us many beautiful stories about Pakistan and the people living there. It almost seemed like a truly holy land with only holy people in it. I guess they missed Pakistan so much and that's why they probably talked about Pakistan in that manner. Because reality was very different.
The characters of many people were shocking too. For example it was hard to know if people liked you for you or because you were from abroad.
And poor people living on the street. A lot of them. Even in Islamabad. That was a sad sight.
But after several days I got used to Pakistan and when we left, it was sad and too soon to my taste. I only spent a few weeks there. I would have loved to stay longer. It would be nice to live there and see other places, I've only seen Islamabad, Rawal Pindi, Kotli and Jamalpur.
