hey mods please dont move it anywhere this i swear is a genuine problem!!!
sometimes when i am sitting/standing/sleeping/doing whatever…my whole body is still and all of a sudden…without me doing anything, a small part of my hand, leg or the skin under my eye just starts moving by itself!!! the first time it happened i was so freaked out!!!
I SWEAR i am not even moving it! it just throbs like a heartbeat…its freaky cuz i can actually SEE the skin move up and down!!! it happens sometimes only out of the blue and stops if i move my arm/leg in a different position!..i told my friends about it and it never happened to them.i was just wondering if it ever happens to any body else…is it normal? am i dying? do i have a disease?
Yeah, it’s normal. It is a vitamin deficiency. My right eye twitched everyday for over a year. Highly annoying, thank goodness it was a minor twitch and not that noticeable. It’s even twitching now as I type.
speaking of twich, my right eye has also started twithing recently. First, it was really scary becuz i thaught i am getting some kind of eye condition. But thank God its not so bad.
Mehnaz, do you know which particular vitamin definciency causes it?
Shweets, i think you have myokymia. In your case it seems you have both facial (eyelid) and focal or segmental (limbs) myokymia. It’s completely benign and self-resolving.
Treatment: Reduce stress and please please lay off caffeine. It’s a **muscular **disorder.
Shweets, however, as a drop out retard, it is my job to inform you of everything. Multiple Sclerosis has similar symptoms like myokymia. Look up MS and see if you have any of the other symptoms. But, inshallah, you have nothing to fret about.
Game and EMM, Action potentials happen in the neurons as a result of depolarization–which i think activates the voltage gated Na channel, not Ca channels. The resting potential of -65mV is from presence of Na and K ions outside the membrane. While Ca++ , I think, plays a part in contraction and expansion of MUSCLE cells, and are released from sarcoplasmic reticulum once the action potentials propgate into the muscle cell. Only time, i believe, ca++ ions play a part in depolarization of AP is in cardiac muscles.
I also read an article on NEJM about ca++(from cacl2) having a positive effect of reducing myokymia discharges (typically ranges from 30 Hz) (i dont think it has anything to do with action potentials though).
Shweets, if you want you can load up on bananas (pottasium) or take calcium supplements.
I think dope’s reply may just cause more twitches to occur.
Shweets,
It’s normal. No need to worry unless the frequency of twitching/spasms increases. If you feel like they are happening more frequently, and are no longer just isolated events then maybe u should check it out. I highly doubt thats the case. Everyone gets lower eye lid twitches every once in a while.
It happens with all the parts of my body all the time. So when no part is twitching it feels weird. Sometimes, I like to watch the throbing part in the mirror. It's fun. Especially when I concentrate more on it, it stops. Then starts again as soon as I stop looking. It's like it's shy of me looking or something.
