Weights and Shoulder Pain

I’ve been lifting weights for a few months now. Nothing heavy … around 4.5 - 5 kg on each side of the bar (yeah, pathetic, I know). Anyway, for a few weeks now, I keep getting a sharp pain in the back of my right shoulder. It doesn’t go away until I roll my shoulders back and forth or up and down repeatedly until I hear the cracking of my bones in my right shoulder. Nothing drastic, similar to when you crack your knuckles. Anyway, it’s getting on my nerves cause there is always a slight pain there. I’m wondering, could this be cause of the weights I’m using? It’s only on the right side so far.

Also, could my cracking my bones/shoulder joints in such a way do some damage?

Has anybody else experienced this?

Sounds like you're not stretching properly and/or warmed up enough before you do your baby weights.

more warm up and stretching before you do weights. VERY important. use the dandas at ur gym,, the all have it,, look for a long wooden stick... and ask someone how you use one.... use that to stretch all ur joints for about 5 minutes before starting ur workout... also, i see some women doing weights, and they dont have a clue... ask someone the right way to do whatever ur trying to do,, u might not be doing it right. I used to get wrist pain and pain along the lengths of my foerarms in the bones.... and i saw someone doing wrist stretching with the wooden stick by holding it from the middle and twisting it on both sides in a circle.. ughh i can explain it....just imagine holding ur arm in from of u and rotating it clockwise and anti clockwise while holding the stick from the middle.... similarly,,, u,ll get used to the stick and different ways u can stretch ur body with it. do lots of it before starting out.

also, make sure the weights arent too much for u... people tend to forget that its not just the weights of the plates but also the metal bar they are lifting,,, so u could be lifting more than what u actually think. e.g the big bench press bars at our gym are 20 kilos alone without any plates :p so someone with 20 kilo plates on each side isnt lifting 40, but 60 kilos!
makes a lot of difference.

Reminds me of my adventures at the gym. I staredt using one of these machines where u lie down on this thing and push urself back against weights. You have these padded thing above ur shoulders which r attached to weights and u have to push urself back. So set it at 60 kgs i think and i'ld do it enthusiastically. I ended up with bruises on both shoulders within a few days...real purple bruises. I quit the gym soon after.

u r not stretching properly.

ok, I’m gonna do some stretches beforehand which I haven’t been doing so far. :bummer: I don’t use the weight machines. I only use weights in the Body Pump group class.

What stretches should I do though? I have no idea.

Kaka, I will look for the wooden thingymajig you are talking about.

I use such little weights right now, I don’t think it’s too heavy, except when we have to do over the head push ups with the bar and I feel like I’m about to topple backwards.

shudders

excercise??

awww :crying: i wanna go back to the gym… i miss it

Soon Sadzzz, soon. Recuperate (sp?)! Build your energy then go to the gym. :)

Back on topic: I can literally hear the bones in my shoulder area cracking when I roll my shoulders. What a disgusting sound!! Is that normal?

I get that horrible cracking sound in my knees when im on the bike or cross trainer.. its gross huh

and yeah sometimes i get this horrible pull in the back of my right shoulder..

have u tried doing all those stretches they do in aerobics class before and after uve done the weights? they usually help quite a bit

I do the stretches where you cross your arm over chest and then pull your elbow into your chest with your other hand. I also do the one where you raise both of your arms behind you at the same time until your arms and chest stretching. Also, another tricep stretch.

BUT, we do these in between the exercises. So I'm not doing anything before I actually start. Maybe that's the problem?

I don't know. At first, I thought that I had pulled a muscle in my right shoulder. Now, however, the pain isn't going away so I think it is something else. I'm gonna try stretching before exercising to see if it works.

yeah.. sounds like the pain i had for about a week and ive no idea how i did it cus i dont do weights at all...

try rolling ur shoulders.. hmm but uve already done that haina. Yeah, stretch the shoulders before lifting the weights..

kaka had some good advice up there

I remember I had this pain near the shoulder blades, next to the spine. It just wouldn't go away. So i stopped doing weights altogether for a few weeks. And behold the pain was gone, and hasn't returned since.
