come on people!!!
its important to be honest and keep track of the pounds we put on as well as acts of worship we do...
don't be chicken!!! :)

Re: Weigh yourself before and after Ramadhan

I did this the last few years, and my weight stayed exactly the same.

Re: Weigh yourself before and after Ramadhan

So far, i've been eating only once, during iftari (iftari, namaz and then dinner) and no snacking afterwards.. :)

Re: Weigh yourself before and after Ramadhan

Gotta love this dude..

for iftar, try as much as you can to break it on dates.... two or three good quality juicy dates. some people are lactose intolerant and cant drink milk, if you can, down some organic milk as this tastes beautiful and is very creamy. it also contains the essential vitamins and enzymes which are mostly lost through homoginised and pasteurised milk. woolworths sometimes bring in pauls organic milk otherwise summerhill organics always stocks it on old canterbury rd.

if not then at least normal milk. if no milk at all then one long glass of water, but sip it in three sips ( as per the sunnah)

once you've done that, sit back for 5 minutes or again, as per the sunnah, pray maghrib and the sunnah mu'akadda after it. that should take you five minutes and you will feel better for praying it in this state since you wont be bloated from a heavy meal.

after this, if you can, start with some watery soup, with either small vegetable peices or noodles. dont have too much of it, just a small bowl or cup if you prefer.

now for the good part... food! get in a good combination of protein and carbohydrates. dont worry too much about cooking without fats as your body has a higher demand in ramadan and so long as it is only the actual foods fat and or the cooking materials fat then it should be ok.

try and eat either red meat, chicken or fish in every iftar. along with it the usual rices, pastas or breads but dont overdo the breads, rices and pastas. also, your plate should be divided into half. half protein and half carbs. try not to use too much spices or curry ( me ducks a wild swing from darqawi) as this will upset your system after long days of fasting.

thats it! your meal is done! your satiated and have enough get up and go to go to taraweeh or engage in your own personal worships for one or two hours. ofcourse after the meal get one glass of water in.

during that one to two hours, bite on a peice of fruit if your really still feeling hungry but hold back until the time period is over before having something else to eat. I know this is hard for arabs who tend to go sweets crazy and want to eat the whole table infront of them, but you must control yourself otherwise you will do more harm than good in ramadan. it will actually work backwards for you and be bad for your health.

if your gonna have sweets, then remember your also going to sleep soon and those sweets wont have anywhere to go except out the other end or into your love handles, sorry, theres no easy way about it.

also eating sweets will make you thirsty so why harm yourself? glucose molecules carry many water molecules around them at cellular level, that is why eating sweets increases thirst.

tea has a calming effect in general if it is good quality loose tea, not the silly plastic stuff. however, with this comes the caffine in it ( and studies have shown green tea to have even more caffine per cup than coffee) and caffine also has an effect on your thirst. Caffine will usually shed your body of water through your kidneys and bowels. As soon as they empty, the body starts signalling for water, usually recognised through our understood thirst. so stay away, as tempting as it might be.

try as much as you can to squeeze fresh juices. ie oranges, pinapples, apple watermelon etc. watermelon in general is excellent and highly reccomended due to its hydration effect on the body and its good qualities, not to mention it was one of the favourate fruits of the Prophet Allah bless him and give him peace.

your sleep is not good sidi, but you didnt need me to tell you that. your body has a right over you and you know this as well. you must try and sleep more and resist the urge to do the nightly activities with brothers and family or at least keep them to a minimum.

suhur is your main problem as well. you gotta get some good nutrition in. even a big bowl of cereal is much better than merely a banana and dates. again get some juice at this time and what i also reccomend is everyone, wether training or not should buy a good quality multivitamin and mineral pack and take the reccomended doeses at this time of the morning. drink enough water to completely satiate you and leave no doubt as to your thirst.

after praying and doing your morning worships, you should knuckle down and get another few hours sleep sidi.

generally if your going to keep eating like this then your body will suffer and you need to either fix it or increase your rest. the body as i mentioned is veryt clever and it will generally let you know what it wants. you just have to learn how to tune into it and then you will be able to easily recognise its signals. if your not going to eat as much, guaranteed you should be resting more. if you eat well, then you can afford to rest less. but eating less and resting less is not going to let you enjoy your ramadan to its fullest.

traditionally the muslims thought that the great awliya and sufis would starve themselves and this is true in some tariqas only. in the shadthili way however, food took on the meaning that the Prophet taught us, that is, eat with complete intention to nourish your body enough to comfortably carry out your worship, that way your eating is even a 'ibada.
people working hard all day and engaging in physical sports are obviously going to have much greater demands on their body than sedentary people so one should not feel ashamed if they eat above the average persons normal intake, rather one should eat and be thankful to Allah at the same time.
