Weekend at Lake George?

Anyone been there? How did you like it?

There is a lot to do but we are looking more into a relaxing weekend there (3 days) for now I am thinking about a day in Ausable Chasm, a day in Saratoga Springs, and a day at lake george itself!!

I am thinking ot staying in Albany and making the day trips to a few of these places.. possible, not??

Any recommendations for activities?

Please share your thoughts!

Thanks

Re: Weekend at Lake George?

If you plan to stay in Albany and drive to Lake Geroge and Saratoga... it would be an hour drive one way. I would recomment get a hotel in Saratoga Springs or Queensbury if Lake George is coming up too expensive. Albany would be too far to drive during vacations. you can do a lot of thing at Lake Geroge e.g. there are Cruise ships that go every 2 hours in the lake... or you can rent the Jet Ski or do Paragliding etc.....
Saratoga Springs is a nice town to visit... kind of historical... do you know what you want to see there?
Ausable Chasm is a great place to visit :)

Thanks,

Sanna

Re: Weekend at Lake George?

oh I thought Albany will be a good point for all of these distances.. the hotel deals at Saratoga Springs are not bad either so thats not an issue!

Cruise sounds like a good idea for lake george..dont plan to do jet skiing etc. due to pregnancy though so we have to keep it relaxing and not too many activities such as hiking/rafting etc!

We love walking around in small towns so saratoga was a choice for that.. do you have any place recommendations? I havent done much search on it yet!

I am looking forward to a day at Ausable Chasm.. I hope it's safe for pregnant women but I am waiting to hear back from them before I finalize that!

What else do you recommend?

Re: Weekend at Lake George?

Lake George is great.

Unless you are going camping, hiking and/or water activates, you dont need a lot of time - it's a nice town to stop by - have lunch walk on the lake. There is a Fort Henry there which is do-able within 45 minutes.

Re: Weekend at Lake George?

did you do a stopover at Lake George??? you have to share pics and details please!!!

I cant wait to get home to do some research for this area!!!

Re: Weekend at Lake George?

yes this was my 2ns time there. I'll pm you pics and details.

Re: Weekend at Lake George?

oh great.... i m waiting :)
I do have the 3 days planned out for out there but I will love your input/recommendations since you have been tehre twice already!!

dos and donts will be great!

Ausable Chasm is out though, its 2 hours from Lake George and not worth the time on such a short trip especially whenthere is a lot to do within 30 miles of lake george!

Re: Weekend at Lake George?

It sounds exciting. Hey njgal, can u put in some more about your visit. Or if you hv blogged it, just let me know.
i'm planning mine pretty soon.

Gemini, when are you visiting there? Dont forget to give in your experience details here. :)

Re: Weekend at Lake George?

  • the best of Lake George is hiking around it. Fall is the best of the season where you can see gorgeous views of the lake and surroundings.
  • the water activites. Rent boat or jet ski around it. It's a long lake so you are never that far from the shore. You can do every type of water activity - from canoeing, water tubes, water rafting.
  • walking around town (there is mini golf place, fort Henry, little shops.
  • lots of eateries around and not very expensive.
  • July 4th has fireworks but I heard it's packed

It's a small touristy place but the best part is being on the water.

Re: Weekend at Lake George?

Awesome ..thanks njgal. Does it have kayaking (with rentals) as well?

Re: Weekend at Lake George?

NJgal....Sounds interesting...!!
What activities are more do-able if you have a 15 mth old with you...??..Any suggestions...??

Re: Weekend at Lake George?

Thanks njgal… I booked a sailing cruise on the lake.. hopefully it will be fun!I will report back later.

chipsy you can do the sailing cruise with a 15month old.. and for more infromation, I will tell you when we get back… now only if you could have joined us :stuck_out_tongue:

Sid.. I believe it does.. check out this link

Re: Weekend at Lake George?

yes - single and double

Re: Weekend at Lake George?

There is a big ship cruise, there is sailing, some hiking trails are very kid friendly - your little one might like exploring nature. The beach is small and sad but to 15 month old it's all the same (sand and water) :)

You can rent bikes with a baby carrier, horse buggy ride around the lake, fishing and you can even take him/her on a raft in shallow water if you want.

Re: Weekend at Lake George?

so plan changed a lot and didnt end up doing as much as I thought we will because we spent a lot of time shopping for our baby hence making way too many stops at any mall, outlet, babystore that was nearby!

Lake george itself is GORGEOUS... We did a three hour cruise (Mohican-Paradise Bay) and thoroughly enjoyed it!! There are quite a few islands in the Lake George that you can go camping at.. We definitely intend to return for that. Bring your own boat or rent one, set up the tent, pay a minimal charge and you are all set!! (some islands are private though)

The fireworks on Friday night were spectacular.. one of the best I have ever seen and apparently it was by a private company for the very first time.. I am sure they will be back considering how amazing it was!!

We also drove up the Prospect Mountain.. I strongly suggest hiking up there but due to pregnancy we only hiked down from the summit to the parking lot.. the visibility was not that great but on a clear day, you get the most beautiful view of the lake from up there!!

Food...

We had read great reviews about Capri Pizza.. grabbed a slice of cheese, sat near the beach and enjoyed it.. BUT we have a very similar thin crust pizza in our very own town so it wasnt that different.. but yes it was pretty good!

Ice cream at Pink roof.. LOVED it!

We had a samosa chaat to go from Taste of India (Lake George Village) and it was the worst samosa chaat I ever had.. they gave us the chana masala salan with a samosa.. it was greasy, and had spoonful of oil in it..no kidding..I DONOT recommend this place!!!

We also stopped by in Albany after reading reviews for Tandori Cuisine(off of I-87) and boy was thata mistake or what.. they had a weekend buffet for $14/person and it sucked.. not many choices, food was bland, and it was horrible!

Chipsy.. there were quite a few water parks, beach, etc which a kid will definitely enjoy!!

Re: Weekend at Lake George?

Awesome... thanks for the great review Gemini. It'll surely help. I'm glad you had a good time.
Do you mind telling how much you spent altogether at the lake and was it just two of you or more?

Re: Weekend at Lake George?

Sid.. do you mean for teh cruise? it was just two of us and we paid $19 each for the cruise!!! you can do a lunch/dinner cruise but I am not a big fan of cruise food safety so we never go for that option!

the link for cruise is..

http://www.lakegeorgesteamboat.com/

if you need information for lodging, etc.. let me know! we booked the hotel about a month in advance so it was a pretty good deal!

and oh I forgot to mention.. there were way tooooo many desis there.. and almost every other car was from NJ.. it was very strange!! I have never been to a place with that many desis

just for fun, I will throw in a picture of the fireworks at lake george on July 1..

Re: Weekend at Lake George?
