it is an old style - my mum talks about doing them in her day (kajoor ki chuttiyan they were called) so they’re definitely making a comeback. having said that, in terms of Western style, I noticed braids and plaits were a big thing about 3 years ago, when people like Paris Hilton (eww) and The OC girls were rocking them…I think they make you look effortlessly elegent…love the look
