Wedding Traditions

Re: Wedding Traditions

I've seen in some weddings in Bombay there's a rasm called "kaan pilee". The bride's brother twists the grooms ear and whispers "take care of my sis or else..". Of course all this is done in jest, always evokes tons of laughter. I've seen once the brother was a little school kid and the husband this tall and beefy fella, yet the kid got to twist his ear :D

Another custom in my family and a lot of Hindu families where I'm from is that the bride drapes a silk shawl over her shoulders when she gets married. Some families have this shawl that's been used for years - everytime a daughter in the family gets married, its used and then given back. The shawl signifies the love and blessings of the bride's family - tells her that your family will always be with you. The shawl that we use is over 250 years old, made of gorjus thick maroon silk and real gold jari kaam. Gave me goosebumps to think that I shared something with all daughters of my family from over a hundred years ago.
