How does a wedding registry work? A friend of mine has a wedding registry, and I have decided that I want to buy a certain item before it is taken (i have a limited budget, and the other items are quite expensive. How far in advance can I buy the item? (i.e is it tacky to buy it a full month before the wedding?) Does the item get shipped directly to the couple’s house? How do they know it was from me?

You can buy it whenever you want - there's no protocol on how early/late to buy a gift (actually not true - according to Miss Manners you can give a gift up to one year after the wedding).
As far as shipping - ask the store with the registry whether they provide shipping services - some do, some don't.
