Wedding Proposal

Hey guys, just a question

is it ok for a girl to propose a guy in our society/culture?

what would you guys think about the girl :konfused:

nothing wrong with it... but ur average joe would do it himself cause we like control

Re: Wedding Proposal

Obviously not the norm in our culture, but I don’t see anything wrong with it.

nopes.. nothing wrong with it at all... Islamicly anyone can do it.. i mean either guy or gal...

Technically - she proposes the guy - a girl invites a guy into her nikah - she signs the nikah contract first.

Guys rule?? :biggthumb

rimsh, quite alright for a woman to propose to a man but it's not a usual occurrence in our culture...the tide may begin to turn a bit though.

Hmm no.

Technically, a girl should have a gaurdian who can make a proposal (father, or in the case that father is a non-muslim, a gaurdian) on behalf of the girl, because a marriage is considered null if it is done without the permission of this gaurdian.

And if a girl does have a gaurdian who agrees to her marriage, i highly doubt she'll be doing the proposing herself.

As for the original question, i think instead of proposing she should have the 'where do we stand' talk ;-)

Sorry i hope this isn't considered as 'off-topic', but wasn't a proposal for marriage put forward (through an intermediary) by Khadijah to Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)? Even for today's times, in certain 'conservative' circles, a female proposing to a male (even through an intermediary as she did) would be perceived of as a bit 'awkward'. BUT - from an Islamic point of view (not Pakistani culture), there's nothing wrong with it... at least in my opinion.

Dunno i could be completely wrong, that's my two cents.

I totally agree with Nadia's 2 cents. :)

Although I don't agree with ammar's point of view either (so what's new) just a reminder that the Prophet's first marriage was pre-prophethood and all we can deduce is that it wasn't a cultural anomaly in those days for women to make the first move and ask a 'representative' of theirs to further the query.

Nadia_H is totally right, theres nothing wrong with it. people often confuse religion with culture. culturally it's considered awkward in our society;why? no one knows, but religiously we have the very example of Hazrat Khadija and our prophet S.A.W

haha Umer, I am so not the type of girl to make a first move, but when you're left with no other choice, then you really do have to take the matter into your own hands. :)
