Wedding Photography Nightmare

Recently i had a bitter experience regarding wedding photography in Pakistan. Thought of sharing it here due to relevance of the topic.
In Jan 2011, I was about to get married (planned for Mar 2011) and i wanted everything to be exceptional (like anyone else thinking we get married only once…) so was the case for photography which i wanted to be very unconventional and interesting… something that could have my heartbeats captured there. I checked many professional photography services including Jimmy’s but was least satisfied. It was my feeling that these guys would treat it like just another wedding being professional. I thought of trying young blood who are not professional but would dare to go an extra mile for satisfying there client. I met a guy on flickr who was doing it as a part time and was very convinced as i could see the passion and unconventional discussion we had promised me to deliver something fresh and new! We agreed on an amount (a handsome amount as i wanted to leave no stone unturned so i didnt bargain much). Being an engineer by profession this guy (lets call him P1) committed to deliver the best he could. Anyways as they big days were close i was having a strange feling as i was never contacted in between. Considering he was busy at office i didnt give an ear to his business and assumed he will be available on time etc… just before mehndi night i had a chat with another guy who has big name on flickr (i can use references but it would be unethical to them). He was interviewed by TIMES for his work on flickr. HE (Call him P2) demanded 30K for Mehndi night and i agreed to pay. So 2 NEW photographers were coming to cover this event and i was fine with that. Anyways they came took a lot of photos and then left.
P-1 came the other 2 days (Wedding and Reception) as well and i paid him in full during this time. I was hoping to get call for Albums but anyways it never happened. there was no news from both of them for next 1/2 weeks. Later i got a call from P-1 after 2 weeks to choose from 1000 photos myself and tell him which ones to choose. It was not my expectation (as i hired them to choose the best work and believing they are artists they should be able to do this) but anyways i had to pick this CD from his apartment (i live near Airport and he was in DHA). I collected DVD came hime hoping to choose best 100 out of 1000s for one event. Unfortunately this CD was BLANK meaning my 1-hour trip through Khi’s rough traffic was useless. I asked this guy he was just SORRY for this and i was supposed to go and collect another one. I went to see him at nursery… waited…. he came late and you wouldn’t believe he said, i should select 100 out of 1000 pics and then gave me an address to get free 100 prints with his reference. Would you pay someone just to come to your party have dinner click 1000 times here and there and go away. Rest of the matter you should deal yourself. IS IT professional at all or leave professionalism think about ethics… you received your amount the night you half of your job and then you showing someone the way to do rest of it. The photographs were nothing but a mess… I was so angry i threw the CD away and have never seen it again.
Now my only hope was the other photographer P-1. I called him he said he is working on my pictures. I live abroad so i had one week left to close this issue, i asked hm whether he can come and inform me about the progress. Anything he needs from my side including suggestions (i am myself a photographer and photo composer but do not get enough time to do it myself). He didnt come on the promised day… neither he showed up in next week. I called him and he stopped responding… i called him several times and he didnt return a single call. I left pk, came to my work place… kept calling him for next few weeks but no luck. I was so PISSED OFF you can understand i guess. I was least expecting this really… i paid and i dint bother these guys while they were working didnt complain about anything at all… Just i wanted a fair attitude from these WELL EDUCATED guys.
I had to involve a friend of P-1 and he tried to sort out this issue. P-1 said he is busy in his exams and that is why he doesnt answer.. he was SORRY not to deliver my stuff. He was SORRY but what about me who had ambitious plans for my wedding. I could hardy get all the raw material from this guy. It took me another month to work on these photos and compose them rightly. I had to do a lot of editing job there…. Some of the photographs were highly disappointing… but anyways the time had gone and i could only regret my decision or fix it somehow. Anyways i did all teh composing and printing job by myself with my part time job when i had already paid the services to someone else.
I think it was my FAULT to think our educated lot will be more responsible or committed… To my experience this is even worst and not sure whom to put our future hopes in..
this was just a side of my recent experiences…its only about photography… i suffered due to my over expectations (or let’s say lack of understanding) in other wedding jobs as well….
I would like to ask these GENTLEMEN what was my fault? Expecting good services? Select wrong guys? Trusting them?!!!
Would like to advise everyone else not to TRUST these big headed unprofessional liars to say the least. Go for professionals at least tehy deliver whatever they commit…
Sorry for the long text and thanks for reading till last line !!

Re: Wedding Photography Nightmare

All i can say is, these things are just very common/normal in Pakistan. No one is ever sorry here. I feel bad for you though, you should name those photographers and post their pages and all the contact info so they can't repeat this to anyone else.

Re: Wedding Photography Nightmare

well as i saw a funny sticker on facebook very recently "Every monkey with DSLR thinks of themeselves as professional photographer", so is the case in Karachi these days. Everyone who has access to a camera thinks of themselves as a professional and taken up photography as a part time profession. You should totally share these peoples names and addresses, as point of this forum is to share your experiences so otehrs can learn from it. Wedding photogprahs are to treasured and i cant even remotely imagine what you must be going through. However, share their details so u can prevent others from going through similar experiences.

Re: Wedding Photography Nightmare

uff a very sad experience indeed. You should definitely name them here.

Wedding Photography Nightmare

Wow that seriously is a nightmare. I hate how u can just get away with these sort of things in pakistan.

& these people actually give all the talented and hardworking new photographers as well which is just sad because i have seen some great young photographers in pakistan.

Re: Wedding Photography Nightmare

That's a terrible experience to go through and im sorry it happened to you, but I have to say, I'm also amazed at your naïveté. Why did you not do more research into their background and credentials before handing over large sums of money?? You opted not to go with well known professionals because you thought they wouldn't do your wedding justice vs. newbies with a camera? Seriously?
And once you did, was there no agreement or contract in place to see your pictures before you paid in full?

Re: Wedding Photography Nightmare

I agree for my careless attitude.

I am not living in karachi, so i went to attend my wedding there and you can imagine the volume of work that i had before the party. I saw some of his work (the one who charged 50K) and it was not bad... when i met him at KFC to go through the details (i was in a hurry) and was only comfortable by the way he carried his conversation. in a way i thought of him sharing the same idea of wedding shoot like i had. Trusting him I did let him decide for the no of pictures (depending on the best shots), he was very nice during the shoot so i thought i will give him the money so he can do the processing and develop prints without any financial thoughts. This was just in good gesture but i agree we should not trust people like this and there should have been an agreement. But again, what is the difference between an MBA graduate and some one who would make fool of people by his nice words. And that too for his wedding.

The other photographer having been published in TIMES and admiration for many young camera holding teens, clearly said i will get 100 pictures and the payment should be in advance. I had this idea of 100 pictures printed and pasted on an album. Later after the occasion he informed me i will have to pay him extra if i need an album. Just imagine this guy who was paid in advance asked me to select 100 photos, i asked him he can select any 100 best pictures and print for me. He insisted to pick the images, i went from the Airport to DHA for collecting one CD, this CD when i came back after almost an hour ride, did not have any data. there was a simple excuse sorry, would you please pick the other one i have copied for you.

At that time i felt myself so helpless and small and at full mercy of someone because at least at least i wanted to have those photos. I collected them the other day from Nursery and the gentle man told me to get print by myself from some shop at Khadda Market... Now i have 1300 almost-useless images that he just clicked and any young kid could do that... if i put them altogether in photoshop elements it would look like a movie !! I didnt go through this irritating exercise of selecting 100 and print for myself. I GAVE UP !!!

Re: Wedding Photography Nightmare

My photo composition skills are said to be good. I managed to extract some good parts and composed this album by myself. I had to pay printing cost by myself plus a lot of precious time (almost a month) for tuning and composing pictures…

Here are some of the composed shots:

Re: Wedding Photography Nightmare

i felt sorry for you until i read that you're a photographer yourself.. you should really know better than to trust an amateur. also, i would think that being a photographer, you would have some reliable contacts to help you out

Re: Wedding Photography Nightmare

There's horrific! I'm sorry that happened to you. BTW I can't see the attachments you posted

Re: Wedding Photography Nightmare

partly it was my mistake but consider i am not a professional; all i know is a photo community from flickr where people post their achivements and projects, so by then i just had one side of the picture which was quite lucrative.

I dont know how to post my photos here.. anyone hwo can help...? thanks

Re: Wedding Photography Nightmare

I live abroad and I understand your frustration ... even if we people research a lot .. meet them eventually etc etc ... before the project bad vendors are always the best and later on theyre always the worse...

i just hope ur memories were nicely captured ... im making booking these days and it scares me out of my skin about people .. thats why i always go for someone who is a good friend of someone i know or reference

Re: Wedding Photography Nightmare

Typically, a photographer doesn't choose final images for you, you choose them yourself based on your preferences, and yes, albums cost extra, unless they are specifically included in the contract to begin with.

I hope you can salvage some pictures of your day. Maybe give the DVD to a professional now and let them see what they can recover?

Re: Wedding Photography Nightmare

that is SOOO BAD!!!! so true that here every monkey with DSLR thinks he is a photographer!!! i feel so sad. You should have done some more research before hiring someone.

I myself these days sorting pics for my wedding album! every pic came out so well that I dont get how to decide 240 pics from 5000 pictures!

Thanks to Allah that Eddiez Studio didnt disappoint me!

Re: Wedding Photography Nightmare

aww I'm so sorry you had this lousy experience , but SGC is right usually the final selection is by the bridal part. Having that said, I would love a client that gives complete artistic freedom though.
I think those photographers serriously lacked an ethical attitude an showing 1000 pics to pick 100 is absurd, 180- 200 is enough choice.
And did you speak about getting an album at the beginning It should've been pretty clear that whether an album was included or not. I Like your work (the FB pages) but personally like a more classic look for traditional albums and the collating for digital albums , each client/person has their own preferences though.

Re: Wedding Photography Nightmare

ohh i feel sorry for you.

Re: Wedding Photography Nightmare

sorry to hear about your experience…

BUT…the moral of the story is…always go with professionals…i dont think i would pick someone randomly to cover my wedding and then have high expectations…i dont understand why you thought they would show any professionalism when they were clearly ammatures  and that to in Pakistan!!! haha its like digging your own grave!
