Re: wedding ideas and pics

I think you allready know what to do...i think your idea,s are great. I saw one wedding video in which they bring the bride in on a doli..on wedding day and then on a mahrani chair in mehndi....Her brothers held the chair from the sides...i thought it looked great...

Re: wedding ideas and pics

Re: wedding ideas and pics

my bhabhi had her rukhsati on a dholi…here’s the pic:

Re: wedding ideas and pics

I've been to one wedding where they brought the dhulan in to the hall after the nikah in a dholi. I didn't like it. :(

Re: wedding ideas and pics

i dont like the idea of brining the dulhan INTO the hall on a dholi...it looks nice if she has her entrance walk....i like the idea of going OUT OF the hall in the dholi..very traditional....actually, come to think of it, my other bhabhi had her mehndi at bella gardens, and she came in on a dholi...but not into the hall..just over the bridge (which was lit with candles)...that actually looked nice...

Re: wedding ideas and pics

Array waH, humaray zamanay ki yaad dila di dholi nay.

Re: wedding ideas and pics

So wat is the story behind dholi? And how is it traditionally done? Where is raatkirani to tell us :cb:

Re: wedding ideas and pics

Re: wedding ideas and pics

Just for that, I’ll give you the long winded version.:snooty: Put on your reading glasses, hon! :chai:

In the old days, before cars and SUVs, people used to travel by foot and by horses. Sometimes the horses pulled carriages and coaches. Anyways, when there was a wedding, the barat would come on foot, on tangas, and the groom would ride a white horse. When the rukhsati happened, they would put the bride in the a doli (that box like thing, not the throne. The throne isn’t really desi), to take her to her new home. Sometimes the doli would be carried by men in the barat (only a good idea if you are traveling down the street), but sometimes’s it would be placed on a carriage if the barat had a long distance to travel. The doli would protect the bride from dirt and grime, as well as keep her in purdah from strange men she didn’t know as well as away from the sight of any dakus who were hoping to steal the bride’s jewelry.

Nowadays, people don’t use the doli for its original purpose, but as a way for the bride to enter the shaadi hall and to make a statement “Look at me! I’m sooo traditional! I’ve got a doli!”:nuch: Anyways, they’re totally useless but a fun prop to have around. And those damn Indian florists charge an arm and a leg to rent one.

Re: wedding ideas and pics

I came on a doli at my mehndi but chose to walk in at the shadi...thought with the outfit it looked more elegnat...but have never seen a "rani chair" I left in a doli for rukhsuti.

Re: wedding ideas and pics
