It won't hurt to buy one anarkali, just make sure it's not too heavy with kaam.
You can't go wrong with a medium lenght kameez with a plain shalwar...but shalwars with lace (strips of embroidery and/or beads) are trendy, at least last time i checked.
Saree (if u wear them) is always in style. a banarsi saree that's not very heavy with kaam is always a classic.
A few of the very trendy styles i've seen are the capris and sherwani + loose trouser style. I don't see capris going out of style any time soon, so it'd be worth it to get one.
And a churidar with a regular kurta (not an anarkali) is also always in style.
In Lahore you can go to Anarkali bazaar, or Rang mahal, or Liberty, or hit the designer outlets on Mm alam road and in defense, it all depends on your budget and tastes. I'm less sure about Islamabad, I remember i went to Jinnah Super and i bought a really nice pair of shoes, but everything else was closed, so i can't judge their fashion =//
