Choosing a cake is vital for any couple planning their wedding day. I am just wondering how many of you ladies would keep the following in mind during the cake ordering process
Which one would you pick for your big day? how it tastes? or how it looks? which one matters to you more or both?
Would you monogram Initials on it? birde’s only or both bride and the groom?
Would you go for a cake tasting before ordering? or just go by the bakery’s reputation?

Which one would you pick for your big day? how it tastes? or how it looks? which one matters to you more or both? -- both but definitely the taste first. if it tastes like rubbish, who'd eat it? and really, if it looked like rubbish, it would, well, look like rubbish and had no business being at my wedding :p
Would you monogram Initials on it? birde's only or both bride and the groom? -- no initials. it wasn't part of the design i chose.
Would you go for a cake tasting before ordering? or just go by the bakery's reputation? -- YES. cake tasting is one of the FUNNEST bits about being engaged. we tasted so many delicious cakes. mmm...
What flavours/fillings would you go for? -- we had a summer wedding so i wanted something light and fresh. we chose a lemon cake filled with white chocolate buttercream and raspberries. so good!
We had to have both taste and looks. I've had enough cakes that are dry and gross.. I'm a huge cake fan so I had to have one that tasted good
We had both of our initials on it
We went for cake testing - one when we initially ordered (which is rare) and the second when we finalized our flavour
We had strawberry shortcake and chocolate cake with a hazelnut mousse filling
Shaza, the filling sounds so YUMMMM!!! however I saw your bridal shower cake your posted on your blog and it looked phenomenal! your sister made that? haina?
I can't remember seeing the one from the wedding day though
SGC, you'd be very surprised how some people only want the cake to look 'good' I even heard someone say it to the baker? I was like okay that's pretty dumb since you are paying for the whole entire thing, why not press on both taste and the look?
In recent months we have had quiet a few wedding cakes, not so pretty cakes that tasted amazing and very pretty looking over the top cakes that tasted like socks....I guess it's about finding the right balance between the both. but having said that I will keep you posted :)
Maybe I'm anal but I need for the cake to taste good.....even if I have to compromise a bit on the looks side. After all it will still be eaten and I'd hate to see plates and plates of cake slices be left with only a bite of two taken from it.
Also I don't like the cake to steal the show when the bride and groom cut it. When they stand up next to it together, I want the eyes to go to the couple and not the cake.
Oooh I haven't seen that in person yet... just in pictures! @Pink'd Out - Yup, the bridal shower cake was my sister! That was sooo yummy too. That was midnight chocolate cake layered with salted caramel and chocolate ganache... sooo goood! Haha. I'm a HUGE fan of cake (if you can't tell :))
I haven't posted my wedding cake pictures yet... waiting for the professional pictures before I post anything on my blog. Waiting sucks!
I know as a guest, if I go to a wedding where the food/dessert did not taste good…or where the DJ was terrible…I will remember that more than the decor, bride’s outfit etc. I’ve been to several wedding where the people spent a lot of $$$ on everything. Yet I don’t remember any details about the bridal look, decor etc. I just remember the food and/or dessert sucked. My hubby feels the same way. So during our wedding, with food/dessert, our #1 priority was taste. This was the only reason we stayed away from fondant.
We were not willing to hire a baker without doing a taste test. We chose a gora lady that does this out of her house (she has been working for a well-know local bakery for over 20 years). She brought 8 different flavors for us (flavors we requested). We ended up choosing 2: Red Velvet and white almond. I went through several bakery sites to look at designs. Hubby and I both fell in love with 1. So we had our cake lady copy it. :halo:
Here’s a pic: (The orange roses are real; sugar flowers were too expensive).
My nikkah ceremony cake looked pretty. But i didnt pay much attention to the taste it was in red velvet but i didnt taste any sample before ordering it. It looked very nice, though i ordered the roses on it in peachy pink ( matching the backdrop roses in pink ) and they made it in orange but it was nice. Ishould ve paid some attention at how it ll taste.
Thank you all for your suggestions - my sister got married earlier this month and the wedding cake was absolutely yummy and looked so gorgeous mA!!
It was a 3 tier-ed pillow cake, top layer was banana custard, second layer was chocolate hazelnut and the third was red velvet.
All in all it was a great cake eating experience, guests really enjoyed taking pictures of themselves beside the cake
I will ask for her permission to post the picture of it here, hopefully a yes
