Webserver anyone....?

So anyone with their very own webserver?<O:p</O:p

I want to set one up… I have the hardware.
I have been looking into it, read a few guides and so on.
I want to use XP Pro. Just for Website hosting (nothing special).<O:p

What is the best software combo ?
Any really good guides out there that you guys know of that will take me from downloading the right software to installing them and configuring them to run a website?

Re: Webserver anyone....?

Can you please explain your query a bit more. I need to know

1) where do you want this server to run from? (home, office, data centre ?)
2) why do you want to choose XP Pro as OS ? (why not SERVER OS, 2000 or 2003?)
3) what exactly do you mean by hosting? (hosting other people's web site or your own site ?)
4) What about up time ? (assuming you need 24/7 uptime, 99.99% or 99% etc etc)

There might be other questions but so far these are the ones coming in my mind.

Re: Webserver anyone....?

I think he just want to setup a webserver for his personal/small site.

Chatwalla try Aprelium Technologies Abyss web server. It's pretty kool and easy to use & configure.

Re: Webserver anyone....?

btw iis sucks. why dont you switch to linux?

i mean, if you are starting something, begin the right thing.

Re: Webserver anyone....?

yea thanks ppl.
as Shery said its just for casual/personel light usage.
I am looking at that Abyss, looks interesting.

I will take it a step at a time. Never used Linux b4 but let me get used to webservers and whatnots b4 venturing out to Linux.
one point i have noted from other webguides is not to use IIS so wont be using that.

:)

Re: Webserver anyone....?

Apache is available for windows as well, if you are security conscious. All the documentation is available on the Apache's website. Highly customisable but not very easy to configure if u go into deep hard core stuff of apache.

Re: Webserver anyone....?

^ ditto! if you have the time on your hands, I'd most definitely recommend Apache for Windows - although it aint the same without a Linux platform. It's the production web server of choice for 70% of websites around the world.

For smaller servers, I've heard good things about Abyss and also JigSaw (W3's standard HTTP offering).

Re: Webserver anyone…?

Why not IIS? It may not have as much a market share as Apache, but its still a very decent server. Specially if you are sticking with the Windows environment. I don’t know what kind of development you are thinking of doing but IIS supports .asp format as well as most other standards out there. Ofcourse it all depends on where you want to go from here!

Re: Webserver anyone....?

yes thanks babajee.
I have installed Apache for now and will see how it works for a month or so.

I am just experimenting with different products. I will try Abyss next.
I am working through ppl recommendations..so IIS is coming down the list.

Re: Webserver anyone....?

Abyss by Aprelium is the besttttttt for personal websites. I've been using it forever.

The only problem with it is i have to restart the web server everytime i make even the tiniest change. Which can be problematic when someone is downloading a large file off my server, in which case they have to restart downloading.

If you dont like that you can use XP's personal web server.. i think you only get it with XP PRO.

Re: Webserver anyone....?

^
hmmm interesting... do u use some kinda password protection on the site to give access to ppl or it is open for all?
is it even possible to password protect a site using Abyss ?

:)

Re: Webserver anyone....?

Yup. There is a option in Abyss called Access Control from where you can allow/deny users or groups.
